Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel tennis team extended their winning streak to three when they defeated the Charlotte 49ers, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center. The Bulldogs improve their record to 4-8, 1-2 SoCon while Charlotte falls to 4-10, 3-2 Atlantic 10.
The Citadel began the match by claiming the doubles point winning two of three. At doubles No. 2, David Orces and Derek Dickey finished first but fell, 8-4, to the 49ers' Michael Anders and Krzysztof Kwasniewicz. On court No. 1, Yufo Sutantio and Alberto Diaz defeated Charlotte's Mortiz Bernhoerster and Jesse Hutchinson, 8-6, leaving doubles No. 3 to determine the point.
Luis Morett and Tripp Larkin paired against the 49ers' Charles Martin-Lecamp and Chris Huynh. The duo dominated most of the match, having a lead of 6-5. Morett and Larkin then pulled away and won the set, 8-5, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage going into singles play.
The Citadel was up 2-0 when David Orces downed Charlotte's Anders, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. The 49ers responded, winning the next two matches to tie the score 2-2. At the No. 6 position, Tripp Larkin fell, 7-6, 6-1, to Charlotte's Kwasniewicz while Derek Dickey lost, 6-4, 6-4, to the 49ers' Davison on court No. 4.
Sutantio and Diaz lifted the Bulldogs back on top for the victory. Sutantio won, 7-6, 6-3, over Charlotte's Bernhoerster at singles No. 1 while Diaz rallied for a 6-3, 7-5 defeat against the 49ers' Anders on court No. 2.
Charlotte's Hutchinson gained the last point of the match in three sets against Morett. At the No. 5 position, Morett fell 6-2, 6-3 after winning the first set, 6-3.
