Bulldogs Drop Series Finale to Rainbows, 13-1

Honolulu, Hawaii – The Citadel baseball team could not get on track Saturday afternoon in their attempt to win the series against Hawai'i as the Rainbows jolted the Bulldogs, 13-1, at Les Murakami Stadium.

Nick Orvin double in the first at-bat of the game, making it the third time in the four-game set that he accomplished that feat. A sacrifice by Brad Felder moved the speedy sophomore to third base and two batters later, David Greene singled in Orvin to put the Bulldog ahead, 1-0.

The lead would not last long for the Bulldogs (7-3) however, as Hawai'i (6-6) tied the game in the second on a homer by designated hitter Jeffrey VanDoornum. The Rainbows put up two runs in the third and fifth innings and blew the game open in the sixth as they scored five runs to go ahead, 10-1, and knocked starting pitcher Michael Clevinger out of the game.

Clevinger (1-2) was charged with 12 hits, 10 runs, a walk, two strikeouts and two hit batters in 5.1 innings. Chris Boyce came in relief and gave up a hit in 0.1 innings pitched, to go along with a strikeout. Austin Pitcher closed the game out for the Bulldogs as he gave up five hits, three runs and two walks in 2.0 innings pitched.

Hawai'i was led by second baseman Kolten Wong who went 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and two walks to help the Rainbows earn a split with The Citadel in the four-game set. Leadoff man Sean Montplaisir also helped the UH attack as he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Greene finished 4-for-4 for The Citadel with a double and the lone RBI for the Bulldogs. Orvin went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a double.

The Citadel returns home on Wednesday as they host USC Upstate at 6 p.m. at Riley Park. Live stats and videostreaming will be available for the game. For more information on Bulldog baseball, visit the official website at CitadelSports.com.
