Bulldogs Capture First Win of the Season Against Case Western

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel tennis team completed a 7-0 shutout over Case Western Reserve on Monday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs opened the match winning the doubles point. Alberto Diaz and Yufo Sutantio dominated at the doubles one position defeating Kyle Gerber and Alex Solove, 8-2. Then Derek Dickey and Luis Morett clinched the point in a close rally when they defeated Spartans Nicolas Howe and John Smetona, 8-6, at the doubles three spot. Josh Cook and David Orces lost, 8-5, to Case Western's Richard Brunsting and Rohan Patel while competing at the doubles two position.

In singles action Morett claimed The Citadel's second point in a 6-1, 6-0, defeat against Spartans' Solove at the number six position. Diaz followed in the victory column taking the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead as he defeated Case Western's Patel 6-3, 6-2, at singles two. Clinching the match victory for The Citadel was Orces with a 6-0, 6-2, win over Case Western's Brunsting at the number four singles spot.

The Bulldogs rounded out the shutout with a win at the number one position as Sutantio defeated the Spartan's Smetona 6-1, 6-3, followed by Cook's 6-3, 6-4, win over Gerber at number three. After winning the first set 6-4, Dickey's opponent Case Western's Carr forced him to a tie breaker. Dickey won 7-6 (7-4) and sealed the victory for The Citadel.
