Bulldogs Hold Off Gamecocks 5-2

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel tennis team continued their winning streak when they topped the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State, 5-2, on Monday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.

In doubles play, Luis Morett and Josh Cook clinched the doubles point for the Bulldogs on court three. Morett and Cook were up, 5-4, but then Jacksonville State's Brian Kenyon and Felipe Watanabe responded and took the lead, 7-6. The Citadel remained focused and dominated the next three points for the 9-7 win.

At doubles No. 2, David Orces and Derek Dickey paired to defeat the Gamecocks' Gustavo Holz and Nenad Marcec, 8-3, while Alberto Diaz and Yufo Sutantio suffered a tough 8-6 loss to Jacksonville State's Chris Duke and Axel Sunderg at the No. 1 position.

In singles action, Morett, Diaz, Cook and Dickey all posted wins. At No. 6, Morett tallied the second Bulldog point with a 6-4, 6-1 win over the Gamecocks' Watanabe and Alberto Diaz downed Jacksonville State's Sundberg in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on court No. 2.

At No. 4, Josh Cook defeated the Gamecocks' Holz, 6-4, 6-4 while on court No. 5, Dickey won in a super tiebreaker. Jacksonville State's Duke won the first set, 7-5, before Dickey rallied to a 6-4 in the second set. In the super tiebreaker, Dickey edged his opponent, 10-6, for the Bulldog point.

At the No. 1 position, Sutantio fought hard but lost, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, to the Gamecocks' Kenyon while Jacksonville State's Marcec won by default to Orces on court No. 4.

The Bulldogs improve to 3-8, 1-2 SoCon while Jacksonville State falls to 5-7, 1-1 OVC.
