Dawg Pound

The epicenter of The Citadel Athletic Department is the Dawg Pound. Located on the second floor of Seignious Hall, the 6,000-square foot facility is the training home for the more than 350 Bulldog athletes.

The Dawg Pound is overseen by Director of Strength and Conditioning, Joe Varga.

Varga leads a strength and conditioning staff that includes Associate Director Russell Hubbs, Assistant Director Seth Summers and Graduate Assistant Sierra Chavez.

Thanks in large part to a generous $75,000 donation from an anonymous donor, the Dawg Pound underwent a $370,000 renovation in the fall of 2019.

Recognizing the impact of this project to enhance the experience of all cadet-athletes, The Citadel Brigadier Foundation Board approved an additional $250,000 commitment. The final effort came through a fundraising campaign by TCBF and Coach Boucher targeted at young alumni and close friends of The Citadel. That effort concluded with 175 donors committing the final $45,000 towards the project.

The upgrades are evident as soon as you reach the second floor with a new turf surface featuring the institutional logo. The surface was installed to serve as a functional space for athlete recovery.

Once inside the weight room, you are greeted with a 20-yard turf surface for training. The turf surface, along with new flooring in the coaches area was installed by PLAE.

The full facility renovation included paint and décor, equipment, flooring, performance technology, and office and storage space for a staff of six. The facility now showcases our partnership with Adidas, as well as industry leading performance brands in Sorinex, PLAE, Iron Grip and Intek.

The center of the weight room features all new racks from Sorinex. The racks are customized for The Citadel and have features that enhance the training put together by the strength and conditioning staff.

One of the biggest additions is the performance technology. These two items are rare and immensely valuable to an FCS school. The Tendo units and Laster Timing System are widely popular around the globe at the highest level of sports. Both of them enables objective measures related to both performance increase and player safety and health.

The final piece to this phase is the installation of graphics to showcase the athletic department and athletes who have put in the work in the Dawg Pound.
