A member of The Citadel’s track and field teams in the early 1960s … was a three-time letter winner and served as team captain his senior year … in April 1963, in a dual meet with the University of Miami, he established the school record in the 100-yard dash (9.6 seconds, several tenths of a second from a world record) … in the same meet, he tied the school mark of 21.3 seconds in the 220-yard dash … also participated in the school’s seldom-defeated relay teams, including the quarter-mile (440 yards), half-mile (880 yards) and mile … was named to the All-Southern Conference team, and was a consistent Dean’s List student and was a Distinguished Military Student.
