Johnson and Zobel Tabbed First Team All-SoCon by the Media

Dec. 3, 2002

Charleston, SC - Junior wide receiver Scooter Johnson and junior place kicker/punter Travis Zobel highlight the Southern Conference's all-league first team as selected by the media that was released Tuesday morning. Senior defensive end Cliff Washburn and sophomore fullback Nehemiah Broughton were tabbed to the second team.

Johnson, a 6-1, 190-pound wide out posted one of the best seasons ever by a Citadel receiver. During the 2002 campaign the Irmo, SC native set the school's single season record for receptions as he hauled in 69 passes for 950 yards and seven touchdowns. All three totals were tops in the Southern Conference. Johnson was also tabbed first team by the coaches earlier this year and is making a strong push for All-American status.

Zobel, a 6-4, 215-pound place kicker/punter tied The Citadel's single season mark as he converted 14 field goals on the season. Zobel led the team in total points with 73 and connected on 31-of-35 extra point opportunities. The James Island native was tabbed second team all-league by the coaches.

Washburn, a 6-7, 270-pound basketball player converted to defensive end was a standout for the Bulldogs' defense. The Shelby, NC native tied The Citadel's single season sack record as he compiled 12 quarterback stops. On the season, Washburn posted 20 tackles for a loss of 90 yards, three pass breakups, forced two fumbles, recovered two and returned one for 36-yard touchdown. Washburn was honored with second team honors from the coaches.

Broughton, a 6-0, 250-pound running back became only the 11th player in school history to reach the 1,000-yard plateau. The North Charleston, SC native totaled 1,038 yards on 224 carries and scored 11 touchdowns. The bruising runner also caught 18 passes for 181 yards and a score to total 12 scores on the year. Broughton was honored with first team accolades by the coaches.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 53-19 smashing of Charleston Southern on November 21st in Johnson Hagood Stadium.
