The Citadel's Link Saunders Ranked Third in Nation in Saves

April 12, 2006

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel's junior closer Link Saunders is currently ranked third in the nation in saves according to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's rankings that were posted on Tuesday, April 11. The right-hander has recorded 10 saves on the year and is only two short of the national leader, Kansas' Don Czyz, who has 12.

Saunders also continues to climb up The Citadel's all-time charts in single-season and career saves. The Irmo, S.C., native moved into third all-time in single-season saves to tie Jay Morgan after recording his 10th save on April 8 over Furman. Saunders is only three shy of tying the single-season record of 13. Currently even with Tripp Blanton with 14 career saves, he needs three more to move into fifth place with Jay Morgan at 17.

Two other Bulldogs also made the national rankings as sophomore left fielder Chris Swauger is 18th in triples per game with 0.16 (five in 32 contests) and senior Tripp Cappelmann is 21st in sacrifice hits with nine in 32 games. The national leader in triples per game is Cody Montgomery of Dallas Baptist with 0.21 (seven in 34 games), while the national leader in sacrifice hits is Ben Orloff of UC Irvine who has 13 in 30 contests.

The Citadel is ranked in team categories as well, as the Dogs are 84th out of 285 teams in earned run average with a 4.14. Complete NCAA rankings can be found by going to http://www.ncaasports.com/baseball/mens/stats.
