Altman Athletic Center

HISTORY
In 2001, the inaugural opening of the new Altman Athletic Center took place and the first piece of the beginning for a new football stadium project took shape.
The nearly $3 million facility, which is located in the South end zone of Johnson Hagood Stadium, is named for the late William M. Altman, Jr., a 1931 graduate of The Citadel. It houses locker rooms for the Bulldogs and their opponents, along with officials' locker rooms. It also features a large hospitality area for members of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.
Bill Altman was a native South Carolinian who graduated with a degree in business administration. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, was awarded the Bronze Star in 1945, and earned service ribbons from the European and American theaters. A successful businessman, Altman owned and operated Altman Motors, Inc., in Orangeburg, S.C. Later in his career, he was associated with the Division of General Services for the State of South Carolina.
Altman received an Honorary Doctorate of Law Degree from The Citadel in 1991. He was also a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto and a leader in the Orangeburg community. A philanthropist and true friend of his alma mater, he and his wife established the William M. Altman, Jr. and Henrietta B. Altman Foundation Citadel Fund in 1984 as a charitable trust to provide education funding for The Citadel in the form of academic scholarships.
Altman was an avid Citadel sports fan who supported the school with athletic scholarships and was a long-time member of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. He was a lifetime member of The Citadel Alumni Association. His gifts to The Citadel over many years provided funding for numerous projects and the Altman Athletic Center is dedicated to Bill Altman in his memory.
Regarding her family's gift to The Citadel, Mrs. Altman said. “My husband was proud to be a Citadel graduate and my children and I are glad we have the opportunity to honor my husband and their father.”
