The Citadel?s Brown Wins 400m Hurdles at Shamrock Invitational, Qualifies for NCAA Regional

Charleston, S.C. Bulldog graduate student Jamel Brown won the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.47 and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA East Regional as The Citadel track and field team competed in the three-day Shamrock Invitational on March 19-21 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Brown's time meets the NCAA qualifying time of 52.51 for the 400m hurdles and he tops his 2008 SoCon Champion and personal record time of 53.42. Brown also broke the school record running pass Tony Brevard's 1990 time of 52.91. Brown ran the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.34 to advance to the finals. He ran a final time of 14.89 for ninth place in the meet.

Brendan Kight won the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:33.88, running the fourth-fastest time in school history and earning a personal-best record. Kight took fifth in the 3000m with a personal-best time of 9:01.92 clinching the sixth all-time record. Chris Fallis came in right behind Kight finishing sixth with a personal-best of 9:04.42 for the eighth spot in The Citadel's top 10 list.

Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat broke the freshman record in the 100m high hurdles with a time of 15.60 in the preliminaries advancing to the finals. She finished for 14th with a time of 15.67.

Brian Baize finished fourth in the men's decathlon tallying 5,926 points. Baize also set personal best times in eight of 10 events. Zach Johnson ran a time of 1:57.41 for fourth place in the 800m run. Frank Dioguardi, Christopher Morgan, Fallis and Johnson ran the men's 4x800m relay ran for a fourth place finish with a time of 7:56.14. This time is the 10th best time in school history.

Quintin Turner finished fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 145' 6.00” and Dioguardi took sixth in the 800m with a time of 1:58.80. Joe Tkach followed for eighth with a time of 2:00.00. Sarah Stickland recorded a time of 12:04.27 for a sixth place finish in the 3000m steeplechase.

James Harris finished fifth in the high jump with a personal record of 6' 6.75”. This mark puts him tied for seventh all-time. Jodi Whittle ran a time of 1:06.76 in the 400m hurdles to finish 10th and Sarah Stierwalt set a personal-best record in the 5000m with a time of 19:20.36 to finish 13th and earn the fifth all-time spot in The Citadel's top 10 list.

Francesca McCrary ran a personal-best in the 400m hurdles for the fourth all-time record with a time of 1:10.73 for 19th place. Freshman Theresa Johansen threw a 122' 2.00” mark in her debut in the hammer. Johansen is fifth all-time with her 17th place finish.

Brown will compete in the NCAA East Regional at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. on May 23. The Bulldogs will participate in the Georgia Southern Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. on Saturday, March 28.
