Greensboro, N.C. - This past weekend The Citadel Tennis team opened fall competition at the UNC Greensboro Fall Invitational Tournament. Registered to represent the Bulldogs were junior Josh Cook and freshmen James Atkinson, Dillon Berkabile and John Dunn. Dunn was plagued by injuries during the weekend forcing him to withdraw from competition.
On Friday, the first day of competition, Berkabile was defeated in the round of 16 of the Flight A1 Singles by Elon's Cody Stauffer-MacDowell 6-4, 6-3. In Flight A2 Cook was downed by John Devose of Gardner-Webb 7-5 and 6-0. Cook went on to compete in the Consolation round before falling to Jonas Brobeck of UNC Asheville 6-2, 6-1. Atkinson was defeated by Elon's Andrew Prince 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 16 in the A3 Singles. In the consolation round Atkinson won the first set but faltered in the second and forced a match tie breaker against fourth seed Zach Reece of UNCG (4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5)).
Berkabile and Cook partnered up for doubles action in the Flight A section. The Bulldog tandem was defeated by Gardner-Webb's Andrew Carter and Devose 9-8 (3). The defeat sent Berkabile and Cook to the consolation round which took place on day two but the duo again fell this time to Asheville's Brobeck and Matt Waissen 8-5.
