Greensboro, N.C. – The Citadel Tennis team lost, 7-0, to Southern Conference opponent UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts. The Bulldogs fall to 3-18 overall and 0-8 in SoCon action, while the Spartans improve to 13-4 and 6-1 in the league.
UNC Greensboro took an early 1-0 lead to open the match after sweeping the doubles point. UNCG's Orcun Seyrek and Timion Meijs first defeated David Orces and Derek Dickey at the No. 1 position, 8-2, and then the Spartans' No. 3 doubles followed with a win by the same score. Ahmet Sarioglu and Ch. Varapongsittikul downed Josh Cook and Jeremiah Dye to clinch the doubles victory. Greensboro's Yaroslav Litus and Jacob Wright captured the sweep with an 8-3 decision over the freshman duo of James Atkinson and Dillon Berkabile, 8-3, at the No. 2 position.
UNC Greensboro continued to dominate the Bulldogs as they rallied for straight sets on all six singles courts. The Citadel's Cook lost to Varapongsittikul, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 position, and David Orces fell to Seyrek, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 position, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead. At the No. 6 position, Jacob Wright's 6-2, 6-0 defeat over Elliott Sperr sealed the match win for UNC Greensboro.
In the final three singles spots, Dickey lost to UNCG's Meijs, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2 position, while the Spartans' Litus swung past Berkabile, 6-0, 6-0, at No 3 singles. At No. 4 spot, Greensboro's Sarioglu edged Atkinson, 7-5, 6-1.
The Citadel will return to action on Wednesday, April 9 for a 2 p.m. SoCon contest with crosstown rival the College of Charleston at The College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
