Furman Earns Eighth SoCon Win at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ashton Gregory finished with 15 kills and Kasey Hohlen added nine as Furman earned a 25-15, 25-17, 25-10 victory over The Citadel in Saturday afternoon Southern Conference volleyball action at McAlister Field House.

The Paladins (15-6, 8-2 SoCon) notched 47 kills and posted a .384 hitting percentage in the victory. Furman's defense was also on point with 10 assisted blocks and 45 digs. Annie Bierman led the way with 10 digs, while Gregory posted a match-high three assisted blocks.

The Citadel (6-20, 0-11 SoCon) was led offensively by the tandem of Dominique Williams and Lauren Hurt, who posted five kills apiece. Sophomore Samantha Espy was the Dogs' defensive leader with 13 digs.

Holding a slim one-point lead in the early stages of the first set, the Paladins used a 15-8 run, highlighted by four kills from Gregory, to move out in front 20-13. Furman allowed just two points over the remainder of the game before kills by the combination of Gregory and Andrea Fisher completed the victory.

Furman continued to control the flow of the contest in the early stages of the second set, using five points in serve by Caitlyn Scioscia to build a 14-6 advantage. Timely kills by Megan Sowell, Moriah Smith and Williams sparked a 5-2 Citadel run, pulling Dogs within five. The Paladins regained their composure and capitalized on three Hohlen kills to earn the eight-point win.

Six kills by Gregory combined with the service games of Meg DeMaar, Christen Sikora and Harrell provided the Paladins with a commanding 18-2 lead in the third set. Three kills by Mallory Moore allowed the Dogs to score six of the next 11 points, but it was consecutive strikes by Anna Parsons and Ashton Stocker that gave Furman the 15-point decision.

The Citadel embarks on a three-match road stretch that includes meetings with Savannah State (Oct. 28), Mercer (Oct. 31) and Wofford (Nov. 1).
