Citadel Football Returns Home to Take on Gardner-Webb

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel looks to gain its first win of 2014 on Saturday when the Bulldogs return to Johnson Hagood Stadium for the first time since Aug. 30 for a 6 p.m. kickoff against Big South foe Gardner-Webb.

The game will be broadcast for FREE over the web on the new Southern Conference Digital Network at the following link: http://www.socondigitalnetwork.com/thecitadel.

Not near a computer? Catch the game on the radio on Sports Radio 1450 in the Charleston area or at one of the Kirkman Broadcasting affiliates. A complete list of stations, including the area of coverage, can be found by clicking HERE.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will be The Citadel's third Big South opponent and second in as many weeks. The Bulldogs dropped a close 20-18 contest at Charleston Southern last weekend and opened the season at home against then sixth-ranked Coastal Carolina.

Gardner-Webb edged Southern Conference member Wofford last week in a 43-36 battle in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Citadel quarterback Aaron Miller is coming off the first 100-yard rushing game of his career as the senior accumulated 120 yards on 22 carries last Saturday. His previous career high for rushing was 66 against the Buccaneers last season.

The 120 yards also put the Clover, S.C., native over 1,000 career rushing yards (1,002), making him the 36th Bulldog rusher and just the ninth signal caller in history to accomplish the feat.

Miller, who has played in 31 career games with his first three starts to open his final season, enters the game with 273 carries and 11 rushing scores.

The Citadel is fifth in the FCS in rushing offense following a 269-yard ground performance against the Buccaneers last weekend. The Bulldogs have rushed the ball 173 times for 877 yards through three games.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker Tevin Floyd enters Saturday's game with 24 tackles on the season, an average of eight per game, which is good for seventh in the Southern Conference. His 4.5 tackles for loss are fourth most in the league.

Floyd has played in all 16 games of his collegiate career and has amassed 62 tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions.

Preseason all-conference member Justin Oxendine looks to build on his impressive performance last weekend as the senior defensive lineman made 1.5 sacks that resulted in 12 lost yards against CSU.

Oxendine raised his career total to seven sacks and his tackles for loss to 16. He is the 13th player since the 2000 season to make seven sacks and stands 2.5 behind Mark Thomas for the lead among current players.

The Bulldogs are 10-3 all time on Sept. 27. Their last contest on this date was in 2008 when The Citadel topped Western Carolina 34-14 at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

The Citadel has outscored its opponents 266-151 and recorded four shutouts on this day (1941, 1930, 1924, 1913).

MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY

The Citadel is celebrating Military Appreciation Night on Saturday. Game day activities include pregame plaza displays from the Army National Guard, the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station and The Citadel's Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC programs. Fans are invited to come to the South concourse during the first quarter to have their picture taken with the Silver Shako and write a letter to a soldier serving overseas.

At halftime, the Charleston Police Department Pipe and Drums will perform, followed by the designation of The Citadel as a "Purple Heart College" and the singing of God Bless America by The Citadel Cadet Chorale.

The team's helmets will be adorned with a ribbon and the number 440, symbolic of the number of Citadel cadets who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their nation. The Bulldogs will also be wearing throwback uniforms honoring the 1960 Tangerine Bowl champions. Those uniforms are being auctioned off by The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, with bidding closing in early November.

To bid on one of the throwback jerseys, go to http://auction.citadelsports.com/auction.aspx.

COACH TO CURE MD

This Saturday The Citadel football staff is participating in the American Football Coaches Association's sixth annual Coach to Cure MD. Along with thousands of AFCA members across the country, Mike Houston and his staff will be wearing shoulder patches on the sidelines to increase awareness and raise money to fund research for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the most prolific lethal genetic disorder of childhood. In the first five years of the program, over one million dollars has been raised through efforts such as these to eradicate this disease.

VOTE FOR SPIKE IN THE CAPITAL ONE MASCOT CHALLENGE

Spike, The Citadel's longtime mascot, has been chosen as one of only 16 in the country and the lone FCS representative in the 2014 Capital One Mascot Challenge. Spike is also the first Southern Conference mascot to compete in the challenge.

Driven exclusively by fan voting, the last mascot standing will be named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year at the conclusion of the college football season. This year's team represents eight college conferences and 14 different states, including three defending Capital One Mascot Challenge champions.

This year's voting structure provides fans three ways to catapult their mascot to victory. By clicking "vote now," fans earn one (1) point for their mascot. To go even further in expressing their enthusiasm, fans can complete weekly 50-point and/or 100-point challenges by posting clever entries on Twitter or Facebook using their mascot's unique hashtag.  Voting opens Monday, August 25, 2014 at 12:00AM EDT and will continue weekly through Sunday, December 7, 2014.  Fans can visit www.CapitalOneMascots.com for all voting information as well as engage with the mascots and other fans at www.Facebook.com/CapitalOne and www.Twitter.com/CapitalOne.

NEW BAG CHECK POLICY AT JOHNSON HAGOOD STADIUM

To Help provide fans with a safe and secure environment to watch Citadel football games at Johnson Hagood Stadium this season, all bags and purses will be subject to search prior to entering Johnson Hagood Stadium beginning at the Sept. 27 contest against Gardner-Webb.

Fans are advised to start heading to the gates earlier. There will be a line where fans without bags can go through in a quicker fashion, but lines for fans with bags may create slightly longer delays than in the past.

Based on best practices being implemented at other venues around the country, fans with bags of all types will be subject to search prior to entering Johnson Hagood Stadium. All bags, including purses, diaper bags and binocular cases are subject to search. Weapons, outside food and beverage, alcohol and umbrellas are examples of prohibited items that will not be permitted inside the stadium.

A complete list of prohibited items, along with other game day information, can be found in the 2014 Citadel Football Fan Guide at the link below:
