CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel football team placed three on the STATS FCS All-American teams that were announced Tuesday.
Junior B-Back
Tyler Renew and sophomore defensive back
Dee Delaney were selected as first-team All-Americans, and senior defensive lineman
Mitchell Jeter earned third-team acclaim. Jeter and Delaney were selected as first- and second-team All-Americans, respectively, by
College Sports Madness last week, while Renew earned his first All-America recognition.
Renew appeared in all 13 games with nine starts and compiled 839 yards and five touchdowns on 162 carries. He ranked seventh in the Southern Conference in rushing yards, and his 5.18 yards-per-carry average was eighth. The Columbia, South Carolina, had his best game in his hometown, rushing for a career-high 174 yards and a career-high two touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 23-22 win at South Carolina to earn SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors. His rushing total was the highest allowed by the Gamecocks at home since Darren McFadden rushed for 219 yards in 2006 and was higher than five teams' rushing totals against South Carolina in 2015.
Delaney started all 13 games at cornerback and registered 46 tackles, including 1.0 for loss, five interceptions, eight pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick. The sophomore from Seabrook, South Carolina, was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection. His interception total led the SoCon, tied for eighth in FCS, and tied for sixth on The Citadel's single-season list. His 13 passes defended also tied for sixth on the program's single-season list. He led the Southern Conference in total passes defended and in passes defended in conference play with nine. Delaney has seven interceptions in his career and already is tied for ninth on The Citadel's all-time career list.
Jeter was a constant presence in opponents' backfields all season. The Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year started all 13 games this season and collected 45 tackles, including 12.0 for loss with 8.5 sacks, two quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery. His sack total is the fourth-highest single-season output in program history. Jeter ranked second in the SoCon and 28th in FCS with an average of 0.65 sacks per game and tied for the conference lead with an average of 0.93 sacks in conference games, including 3.0 at Samford, the Bulldogs' most against an FCS opponent since 2005 and tied for the highest single-game total in the SoCon this season. The senior from Rock Hill, South Carolina, ranks second on The Citadel's all-time career sacks list with 20.0 and is sixth in school history with 32.0 career tackles for loss.
The Citadel is the only Southern Conference school with multiple first-team All-Americans and is one of two programs nationally with one first-team All-American on offense and defense. The Bulldogs' three All-Americans tied for the most in the SoCon and fifth in the nation.
