Renew Earns Second SoCon Weekly Recognition

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel's Tyler Renew has been named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday.

Renew earned the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week nod after one of the best rushing performances in Southern Conference history in The Citadel's 37-34 overtime win against No. 20 Samford. The senior from Columbia, South Carolina, rushed for a career-high 285 yards and a career-best three touchdowns on a career-high 45 carries. Renew's rushing total was one yard shy of The Citadel single-game record established in 1988 and bettered his previous career-best performance set in last season's win at South Carolina by more than 100 yards.

His 285 yards rank seventh in Southern Conference history and second among FCS rushers this season. Renew posted the first 200-yard rushing game by a Bulldog since 2013 and the most rushing yards by a SoCon rusher since 2012. His touchdowns included one from 55 yards, one from 58 yards and the final touchdown of regulation that pulled the Bulldogs within three points with 4:24 remaining in regulation.

The game marked his ninth career 100-yard rushing performance, moving him into a tie for eighth on The Citadel's all-time list, and pushed his career rushing total to 2,628 yards, the seventh-highest career rushing total in school history. This season, Renew ranks third in the Southern Conference and 15th in FCS with an average of 99.6 rushing yards per game. His 112.0 all-purpose yards per game are fifth in the conference.

Renew earned his second conference weekly honor and gave The Citadel its ninth conference recognition so far this season. Kailik Williams also has two honors this season as he was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Month for September and the Defensive Player of the Week in week eight. Renew was named Offensive Player of the Week after the season opener at Mercer, defensive back Dee Delaney was named Defensive Player of the Week for week two, DeAndre Schoultz picked up Special Teams Player of the Week in week three, linebacker Joe Crochet earned the week five SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honor and kicker Cody Clark was the conference's Special Teams Player of the Week in week seven. In addition, Myles Pierce was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week in week eight.

The 5th-ranked Bulldogs, who are 9-0 and have clinched the Southern Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs and at least a share of their second straight conference title, travel to VMI this week. The Military Classic of the South kicks off at 1:30 p.m. in Lexington, Virginia, and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
