The Citadel Places Three On STATS All-America Team

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel football team has three representatives on the STATS FCS All-America Team, it was announced Tuesday.

Defensive back Dee Delaney was a first-team selection, offensive lineman Isaiah Pinson earned second-team honors and B-Back Tyler Renew garnered third-team accolades. The Citadel's three selections are tied for the fourth-highest total in FCS and tied for the most All-Americans in the Southern Conference. With his eighth career All-America honor, Delaney is now the most decorated All-American in The Citadel's football history.

Delaney, a first-team STATS All-American for the second straight season, has also been voted a Walter Camp All-American, a first-team All-American by the Associated Press and College Sports Madness and a first-team All-Southern Conference performer by the conference's coaches and media for his performance this year. The junior from Beaufort, South Carolina, recorded 35 tackles, six interceptions, eight pass breakups and one fumble recovery in 2016. His interceptions total tied for third on The Citadel's single-season list, and his 14 total passes defended tied for fourth in a season in program history. Delaney's six interceptions ranked first in the Southern Conference and tied for third in FCS in 2016, and his passes defended total ranked second in the SoCon. He was one of five FCS defenders with two multiple-interception games in 2016, grabbing two against Furman and making interceptions on back-to-back plays in the second round of the FCS Playoffs against Wofford.

Delaney's career total of 13 interceptions is tied for second on The Citadel's all-time career list, five behind the program record, and his 32 career passes defended are fourth in program history, also five shy of the Bulldogs' career record. Delaney helped lead a Bulldog defense that ranked first in the Southern Conference in fewest first downs allowed, third-down defense and fewest passing touchdowns allowed. The Citadel held its opponents to 177 first downs, the seventh-best mark in FCS, while allowing 30.1 percent on third-down conversions to rank ninth in FCS. The Bulldogs also ranked 12th in FCS with 13 passing touchdowns allowed.

Pinson has also been named a Walter Camp All-American and a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association this season. He also was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection by the conference's coaches and media and the SoCon's Jacobs Blocking Award winner. The junior from Wellford, South Carolina, started all 12 games this season at left tackle to increase his consecutive starts streak to 37 games. He played 889 snaps, missing only 15 offensive plays in 2016, and recorded 123 knockdowns while allowing zero sacks and grading out at 90-percent for the season.

Pinson blocked for an offense that leads FCS in rushing with an average of 348.2 yards per game and fewest tackles for loss allowed with an average of 3.3 per game and is tied for the fewest sacks allowed in Division I with three. The Bulldogs also finished the season ranked first in the Southern Conference in time of possession, yards per completion, third-down conversions and yards per rush. Their average possession time of 34 minutes, 37 seconds ranks second in FCS, while the Bulldogs' 15.5 yards per completion ranks sixth, their third-down conversion rate of 47.7 percent ranks ninth and their average of 5.37 yards per rush ranks 10th.

Renew earned his second All-America honor from STATS after he was a first-team selection in 2015. The Columbia, South Carolina, native rushed for 1,096 yards and four touchdowns on 251 carries and caught five passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns during his senior campaign. Renew ranked fourth in the conference in rushing with an average of 91.3 yards per game, and his average of 101.3 all-purpose yards per game ranked sixth in the SoCon. He ranks seventh on The Citadel's single-season rushing list and produced the 15th 1,000-yard season in program history. In the Bulldogs' win against 20th-ranked Samford that clinched a second straight conference championship, Renew rushed for 285 yards and three touchdowns, producing the seventh-highest single-game total in Southern Conference history and the third-best rushing performance in FCS this season while finishing one yard shy of the program record. His touchdowns total also tied for the most in the SoCon in 2016.

Renew finished his career with 2,828 yards and 15 touchdowns on 601 carries. His rushing yards total and rushing attempts both rank fifth on The Citadel's all-time list, and his 2,948 all-purpose yards are 10th on the Bulldogs' career list. Renew recorded nine 100-yard rushing games during his career to tie for the eighth-highest total in program history.
