CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel senior
Capers Williamson broke his own school record in the javelin throw at the Shamrock Invitational over the weekend. Williamson's farthest heave totaled 231 feet, 1 inch to set a new program-best mark and place third overall at the meet hosted by Coastal Carolina.
Williamson's performance in the javelin event highlighted several solid results for the men's and women's track and field teams as the squads opened their spring season at the Shamrock Invite in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.Â
Senior
Caillian Colquitt launched the weekend in style for the women's team, placing second in the 10,000-meter competition. Colquitt clocked a time of 39 minutes, 13.47 seconds, less than a minute shy of a program record. Sophomore
Cynthia Martinez also excelled in distance events, securing a personal record in the mile with a time of 6:34.28.
The women's squad was paced in sprints by
Ty'Rhonza Harris and
Sarah Johnson, who had busy weeks at the Shamrock Invite. Harris led the Bulldogs in the 400-meter dash, finishing seventh overall with a 1:01.47.
Summer Thompson and
Katherine Keller followed with 1:04.13 and 1:04.76, respectively.
Harris later clocked a 27.11 in the 200-meter sprint. Johnson edged Harris in that event, collecting a personal-best time of 26.74. Freshman
Hannah Murray launched her first career outdoor season by clocking a 28.11 in the 200, which was faster than any time she recorded in high school.
Johnson and Harris also led the Bulldogs in relays. The pair teamed up with
Jessica DeWitte and
Bethany Reeves to record the ninth-fastest time in program history in the 4x800-meter relay as the quartet finished in 10:26.80. Additionally, Johnson, Harris, Thompson and Murray clocked a time of 51.19 in the 4x100-meter relay.
In field events,
Asyria Daniels placed 11th overall in the long jump, leaping 16-5.75. Freshman
Dymond Ettson won her flight in the long jump and finished 25th with a top leap of 15-6.75.
On the men's side, Josiah Johnson,
Devin Singleton,
Louis Lawrence and
Tevin Williams complemented Williamson's big day by recording the fifth-fastest time in program history in the 4x200-meter relay. The quartet finished 11th overall at the Shamrock Invitational. They later teamed up to clock a 42.35 in the 4x100-meter relay.
Freshman
Clarence Richardson began his outdoor collegiate career with a strong debut. He placed sixth overall in the unseeded 400-meter sprint with a personal record 51.54. He later recorded a 23.01 in the 200-meter sprint.
In men's field events,
Derrick Freeland and
Jackson Nosbisch posted notable performances. Freeland set a new personal record in the hammer throw with a toss of 147-08. Nosbisch placed second overall in the high jump with a leap of 6-6.75.
