Bulldogs Drop Two Matches At Fullerton Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Citadel volleyball team fell in two matches against Colgate and Cal State Fullerton on Friday night at the Fullerton Classic.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a four-set set loss, 24-26, 25-20, 15-25 and 22-25 to Colgate.
The Citadel hit .160 for the match, hitting a match-high .342 in the second set. The team finished with 69 digs, 53 kills, 51 assists and four service aces in the match.
In the first set, the Bulldogs held a 23-22 lead, but were unable to close it out with Colgate taking four of the last five points.
Outside hitter Moriah Smith led the team with 17 kills, 18 digs and three block assists. Right-side hitter Megan Sowell finished with 14 kills and a .243 hitting percentage. Setter Logan Smith had 44 assists, chipping in with 13 digs. Libero Samantha Espy added 16 digs defensively.
The Raiders hit .274 for the match, led by 15 kills from Kathleen Harris.
In the second match of the night, the Bulldogs fell in three sets 26-28, 16-25 and 17-25 to host Cal State Fullerton.
The Bulldogs took a tough loss in the opening set, falling in extra points 28-26. The team had the first opportunity to claim the set, leading 24-23 on a kill by middle hitter Dominique Williams. Moriah Smith nailed her 11th kill of the set to tie the match at 26, but the Titans took the next two points to claim the set.
After hitting .267 in the first set, the Bulldogs dropped to hitting .056 in set two and .100 in set three. The Titans finished the match hitting .313.
Smith recorded her fifth straight double-double and eighth in nine matches with 21 kills and 11 digs. It was also her fourth match with 20 or more kills, but the first in a three-set match.
Setter Logan Smith recorded 34 assists, while libero Samantha Espy had a team-high 14 digs.
The Bulldogs fell to 4-5 on the season and continue play in the Fullerton Classic on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time against Weber State. They will wrap up the tournament against Air Force at 8 p.m. Live stats will be available for both of The Citadel's remaining matches.
