2/16/2017 10:37:00 AM | Mixed Rifle
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel rifle team is hosting an NCAA Qualifier inside the Inouye Marksmanship Center on Saturday.
Â
The packed field includes two top-20 teams, led by No. 9 North Carolina State. The Citadel also is hosting 20th-ranked North Georgia, Georgia Southern and UAB. Saturday's match is an important piece of the NCAA Championships selection as the top-eight teams will be selected based on the highest total score when averaging a team's three highest match scores from the season, with no more than one score used for any site, and adding that score to the team's NCAA Qualifier match score. In addition, the top scorers in each discipline from the NCAA Qualifier will be selected to round out the national championship field.
Â
"Our team worked hard this week on correcting some issues with prone and kneeling in smallbore," head coach William Smith said. "Our standing position in smallbore and air rifle has been strong, and I expect a solid score in air rifle. I'm cautiously optimistic for our team score. We have several shooters with the potential to make the NCAA Championships if they shoot their match of the year."
Â
The Citadel's co-ed team, coming off its fourth victory of the season last weekend at Wofford, features sophomore Allison Auten, junior Colton Poole, freshman Alexander McAlear, seniors Patrick Meyer and Richie Parra and juniors Matthew Davenport and Morgan Long. Auten, Poole and McAlear are slated to compete in air rifle and smallbore, while Parra and Long will contest air rifle only and Meyer and Davenport will participate in smallbore.
Â
Poole enters the weekend with the sixth-highest aggregate score average in the Southern Conference. His 1,129.42 average consists of average scores of 557.17 in smallbore and 572.25 in air rifle, which both rank eighth in the conference in the individual disciplines. Auten's 577.50 average air rifle score is the third-highest in the conference, boosted by her season-best score of 590 that ranks second on the conference's performance list this season. McAlear, who has competed in air rifle and smallbore in all 12 matches this season, has an average air rifle score of 564.5 with a season-best 575 and is averaging 547.8 in smallbore with a season-high 559.
Â
Long's season-best air rifle score of 580, recorded Oct. 22 at North Georgia, is tied for eighth in the SoCon this season, and his average of 570.5 ranks third on the team. Parra is averaging 569.2 points per match in air rifle, and his season-best 576 from Nov. 5 against Wofford ranks fourth on the team. Meyer boasts a season-high 555 in smallbore and is averaging 540.4 points per match. Davenport scored a season-best 552 in his last smallbore competition and has an average of 534.6 points per match this season.
Â
The women's team is made up of five individuals all contesting both disciplines. The group is led by freshman Faith Totherow and sophomore Leah Fenwrick-Wallace. Totherow has the women's highest smallbore average and highest individual match score, courtesy of a 531.2 average boosted by a season-high 554 from Nov. 12. Fenwrick-Wallace tops the team in air rifle with a 557.3 average and a season-best 570 she recorded Jan. 28.
