CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team will host the 2017 Southern Conference Wrestling Championship in McAlister Field House on Saturday.
This is the first year the championship moves back to campus sites after being held in Kimmel Arena in Asheville, North Carolina, for the past two years. The Bulldogs last hosted the championship in 2009. The championship features eight teams including full SoCon members The Citadel, Chattanooga and VMI and associate members Appalachian State, Campbell, Davidson, Gardner-Webb and SIU-Edwardsville.
The Bulldogs (3-10, 2-5 SoCon) head into the championship with two No. 1 seeds. Graduate student Aaron Walker sits at number one for the 157-pound weight class, and sophomore Sawyer Root is the top seed at 197 pounds. Junior Ty Buckiso holds the second seed for the 149-lb. weight class, and freshman Douglas Gudenburr is the fourth seed at 141 pounds.
In 2016, the Bulldogs took sixth place overall in the championship. Walker looks to reclaim the No. 1 spot in his weight class after winning consecutive conference titles in 2014 and 2015. Last season, the San Antonio, Texas, native finished second overall in the 157-lb. weight class and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Wrestling Championship.
Buckiso took third place in the 141-lb. weight class at the 2016 championship. This season, the Venetia, Pennsylvania, native moved up a weight class and finished with a 6-1 conference record.
The championship is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with doors opening at 9 a.m. and finals scheduled for 7 p.m. All rounds of the championship will be live-streamed on the SoCon Digital Network, and live stats can be found at CitadelSports.com.
