Duane Picks Up Third Place Finish at Hokie Open

ROANOKE, Va. – The Citadel wrestling team finished competition at the Virginia Tech-hosted Hokie Open on Sunday, Nov. 4 in Roanoke, Va.

How It Happened

Sophomore Martin Duane was the top finisher for the Bulldogs taking third in the 184 freshman/sophomore division. He would only drop one match to the eventual first-place winner of the bracket, Victor Marcelli of UVA. Duane won his final match on an 8-2 decision over Hunter DeLong of West Virginia University.
Freshman Chon Porter kicked off the season for the Bulldogs with a 10-4 decision over Bobby Pryhocki of Campbell University. Porter would go on to win his second match up of the day against N.C. State by a decision of 12-6.
No. 1 ranked Sawyer Root finished in fourth place at 197 pounds, going 2-2 on the day with victories against UNC and Chattanooga. Root is the only returning member of the team to reach the NCAA Regionals last year.
Freshman Jake Rotunda took fifth place at 133 in the freshman/sophomore division with a pin over in his final match. Rotunda dropped his first match of the day but would rally back to tally a fall, major decision and a decision before pinning Patrick McCormick in 1:18.

"We are really proud of how some of the underclassmen came out and performed today. I think we have a lot of room for improvement but it was definitely a promising start for the team."

The Citadel wrestling team will continue their 2018 campaign on the road next weekend Nov. 10-11 as they compete in the Journeymen Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The second day of competition will be an individual competition known as the Journeyman Collegiate Classic.
