21st-Ranked Rifle Team Hosting SoCon Championship This Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 21st-ranked Citadel rifle team will host the Southern Conference Rifle Championship at the Inouye Marksmanship Center for the second straight year this weekend.
The championship will run Saturday, March 3 through Sunday, March 4. Action will begin on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. and Sunday will begin promptly at 8 a.m. Admission is free to the public.
Included in this year's field will be No. 20 North Georgia, 22nd-ranked Georgia Southern, No. 24 UAB, 25th-ranked VMI and 27th-ranked Wofford along with the host Bulldogs.
Last season, North Georgia claimed the SoCon team title. The 2016-17 campaign marked the first time the Southern Conference sponsored the sport since 1985. The league previously sponsored rifle from 1956-85 with The Citadel claiming a league-best 10 team crowns during that span.
This season, the Bulldogs are 13-3 against Southern Conference opponents, having defeated all but North Georgia in head-to-head competition at some point this season. The Bulldogs went 4-1 against Georgia Southern, 2-0 against VMI, 4-0 versus Wofford and 2-0 against UAB.
The last time out, The Citadel defeated Georgia Southern and Wofford at home in an NCAA qualifying match. The Bulldogs posted an aggregate score of 4562 to take top honors with the Eagles posting a 4524 aggregate score and the Terriers ended the day with an aggregate score of 4443.
The Citadel had six shooters end the day in the top 10 for the match led by junior Allison Auten. The two-time SoCon Air Rifle Shooter of the Month, Auten claimed top honors for the day with an aggregate score of 1154, the fourth-best aggregate score of the season for a Bulldog. Auten also had the day's best smallbore score of 568 and wrapped up the day by finishing second in air rifle with a 586.
Freshman Max Brabston put together a solid day with the fourth-best aggregate score of 1147. Brabston finished smallbore fourth with a 562 and was third in air rifle with a 585.
Senior Colton Poole finished sixth in aggregate score with an 1127 with Alexander McAlear finishing eighth with an 1121. Leah Wallace posted an 1119 to finish ninth and senior Morgan Long ended his day 10th with an 1108. Wallace's aggregate score included a personal-best 547 in smallbore, marking the second match in a row that she has posted a career-best in the discipline.
For The Citadel women's team, Lauren Pringle earned her varsity letter for the year, shooting a 1076 aggregate score made up of a 515 in smallbore and a 561 in air rifle.
Senior Carli Cline led the way with a 1080 (526 in smallbore, 554 in air rifle) while Shay Littlejohn finished second on the women's team with a 1071, including a 519 in smallbore and 552 in air rifle. Tierra Price rounded things out for the women's team with a 1026 (511 smallbore, 515 air rifle).

The Citadel will host the 2018 NCAA Rifle Championships March 8-10 at McAlister Field House. The field will include the top eight teams in the nation highlighted by No. 1 West Virginia and No. 2 TCU. Also making the field are Murray State, Kentucky, Alaska Fairbanks, Air Force, Ohio State and Nebraska.
The NCAA Rifle championships will mark the third national championship competition hosted at The Citadel and first since Johnson Hagood Stadium was the site of the 1983 and 1984 Division I-AA football national championship games.
