CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Citadel wrestling team finished competition on Tuesday in the Southern Scuffle.

Rian Burris, Chon Porter, Sawyer Root, Douglas Gudenburr and Dazjon Casto were the five Bulldogs that recorded a pair of wins in the tournament.

Burris began the day with a bye before defeating Tim Suter of Edinboro by an 8-0 major decision. He would go on to lose a close match to Stanford's Paul Fox by an 11-7 decision. Bouncing back, Burris then defeated Southern Conference opponent, Ryan Resnick of Chattanooga.

Root picked up a first-round decision over Michael Bulkin of Columbia before dropping his match to No. 17 ranked Randall Diabe from Appalachian State. He would redeem himself with a victory over conference foe, Jake Johnson of Chattanooga by technical fall (16-1).

Gudenburr lost a tight decision in his first match of the day to Collin Glorioso of Lock Haven by a 2-0 decision. After a bye in the second round, he went on to win back-to-back matches by decision against opponents from George Mason and Campbell.

Freshmen, Casto and Porter each tallied a pin to clinch a victory against their opponents in 6:43 and 4:58, respectively. Porter would finish the day 2-2 after picking up victories over Matt Swanson of Binghamton and Brock Port of Lock Haven. Casto went on to also finish the day 2-2 after an opening-round victory against Quentin Milliken of Rider College and a win over Cal State Bakersfield's Jacob Thalin.

"The Southern Scuffle is one of the most talented tournaments in the nation so it was good experience against great opponents especially for some of our young guys. We didn't get the results we wanted but that will give us some good preparation as we head into Southern Conference match ups. " said head coach Rob Hjerling.

The Citadel wrestling team will travel to Fairfax, Virginia on Jan. 13 to take on George Mason University.
