GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches to James Madison and East Carolina on Monday at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center. The Bulldogs and Dukes kicked things off with a 9 a.m., neutral-site match won by JMU, 7-0. The day concluded with a 2:30 p.m. match between The Citadel and ECU, a 7-0 victory by the home-standing Pirates.

The day started with the Dukes claiming the doubles point behind a clean sweep of the action.
Paul Mendoza and
Tate Steinour combined forces at No. 1 doubles to defeat
Willem van Zyl and
Gavin Stewart, 6-3.
Pierre Kohler and
Alvaro Arce defeated
Roy Hobson and
Will Graham, 6-1, at No. 2, and
Eugene Clur and
Josh Raymundo finished off the scoring with a 7-5 win over
Noah Nawabi and
Phillip Quinn at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Stewart forced his match at No. 5 singles to go to three sets. After Clur claimed the first set 6-4, Stewart bounced back with a 6-4 win in set two, with Clur winning a tough third set 10-6 to clinch the point.
Both van Zyl and Nawabi claimed five points at No. 3 singles and No. 3. Van Zyl fell 6-3, 6-2 to Mendoza, while Nawabi dropped the No. 4 singles point, 6-3, 6-2, to
Damon Roberts.
At No. 1 singles, Hobson fell 6-1, 6-0 to Kohler, and
Jack Pyritz dropped his No. 2 singles match, 6-0, 6-2, to Arce. Quinn rounded out singles action with a 6-4, 6-0 loss at No. 6 to Steinour.

The second match of the day was another hard-fought match from doubles through singles.
Nawabi and Quinn avoided a clean sweep by the Pirates in doubles by taking the No. 3 matchup 7-5 over
Austin Allen and
Diogo Marques.
Despite the strong showing by Nawabi and Quinn, which lasted the longest of the three doubles matchups, the Pirates ultimately claimed the doubles point. Van Zyl and Stewart fell 6-1 at No. 1 to
Vlad Anghel and
Wisse Jonker, 6-1, while Hobson and Graham dropped No. 2 doubles, 6-3,
to Will Bissett and
Javier Renones.
In singles action, Nawabi and Quinn again put up the biggest fight, forcing three tiebreakers between their matchups at No. 4 and No 6 singles. Nawabi fell 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-2) to Bissett at No. 4, and Quinn dropped his matchup 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) to Allen at No. 6. As has been the case during the early going of the season, Quinn's match lasted the longest of the day, wrapping up last.
Van Zyl's matchup at No. 3 singles, a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Jonker, was the first to wrap up, followed by Pyritz's No. 2 matchup against Marques, a 6-0, 6-2 decision.
At No. 1 singles, Hobson claimed seven points against Anghel, but dropped his matchup 6-3, 6-4, and Stewart claimed five points from
Ronny Georgi at No. 5 singles. Georgi claimed the matchup 6-2, 6-3.
