Tennis Splits Pair of Matches Sunday

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Citadel men's tennis team split a pair of matches in Knoxville, Tennessee on Sunday, including claiming a 6-1 win over Carson-Newman in the morning. The Bulldogs also dropped a hard-fought match, 7-0, to No. 20 Tennessee in the afternoon.

Match 1 Rundown: The Citadel 6, Carson-Newman 1
The Citadel extended its winning streak to four matches in the morning against a strong Carson-Newman team. The Bulldogs took No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point, including a 6-2 win at No. 3 by Noah Nawabi and Phillip Quinn over Marc Bantel and Victor Ireno. At No. 1, Gavin Stewart and Willem van Zyl teamed up to best Gabriel Dabdab and Jesus Bacete, 7-5.

At No. 2 doubles, Rintaro Oka and Hernan Toledo won, 6-3, over Roy Hobson and Will Graham.

In singles action, the Bulldogs took five wins, all in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-2 win by Quinn over Joseph Stiles at No. 6. At No. 5 singles, Stewart bested Bacete 6-2, 6-3.

Nawabi and van Zyl won their No. 3 and No. 4 singles matchups by matching 7-6, 6-2 scores. Nawabi bested Toledo at No. 3, and van Zyl defeated Bantel at No. 4.

Hobson rounded out the Bulldogs' wins in singles action with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Dabdab at No. 1.

At No. 2 singles, Oka defeated Jack Pyritz 6-1, 6-3.

Match 2 Rundown: #20 Tennessee 7, The Citadel 0
In the day's second match, the Volunteers took the doubles point behind victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Adam Walton and Luca Wiedenmann defeated Hobson and Graham, 8-0, at No. 2, and Andrew Rogers and Martim Prata downed Nawabi and Quinn, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.

At No. 1 doubles, play was suspended with Stewart and van Zyl tied, 5-5, with Presto Touliatos and Pat Harper.

In singles action, Quinn took eight games from Prata at No. 6 to fall 6-4, 6-4, and van Zyl claimed six games over Rogers, despite falling 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 5, Stewart took five games from Pat Harper, falling 6-3, 6-2, and Pyritz won three games, but fell 6-2, 6-1 to Scott Jones at No. 2.

Hobson fell 6-1, 6-1 to Touliatos at No. 1 and Nawabi dropped his No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-2 to Wiedenmann.
