Defensive Switch Ignites Offense

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The decision to switch to a 2-3 zone midway through the first half ignited the Bulldogs on a 16-0 run that helped The Citadel remain unbeaten on the season with a 94-82 victory over Presbyterian Tuesday afternoon inside McAlister Field House.

How it Happened
  • The Blue Hose came out hot from the outside as they knocked down each of their first three three-pointers to help open a 24-18 lead just passed the midway point of the first half.
  • Head Coach Duggar Baucom then made the switch to the zone and the Bulldogs responded with a 16-0 run over the next 3:51.
  • Back-to-back fastbreak layups from Hayden Brown and Fletcher Abee tied the game, and Brent Davis followed with a transition three to give the Bulldogs a 27-24 lead.
  • Kaiden Rice would knock down a pair of three-pointers as the Bulldogs continued to stretch their advantage.
  • A basket in the paint from Rice with 2:14 ended a 30-9 run that the Bulldogs ahead 48-33.
  • Brown would close out the scoring for the Bulldogs as he stole the ball near midcourt and raced ahead of the pack for the dunk and a 52-39 halftime advantage.
  • The second half would start with both teams exchanging baskets over the first five-plus minutes. When the first media timeout was reached, the Bulldogs still held a 14-point advantage.
  • The Blue Hose would come out of the timeout on an 8-0 to pull within six points with 12:56 to play.
  • That would be as close as PC would get as a basket from Clark and a three-pointer from Abee pushed the advantage back to 14 points.
  • The Citadel was able to keep the advantage in double figures the remainder of the game, thanks in part to a big transition three-pointer from Rudy Fitzgibbons, III and clutch free throws down the stretch.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • The victory improved the Bulldogs to 7-0 on the season, marking the best start since opening the 1919-20 season 11-0. The 7-0 start is the third-best start in program history.
  • The Citadel shot a season-best 56.7% (34-of-60) from the field. It is the highest shooting percentage since shooting 57.5% (46-of-80) against Piedmont on Dec. 10, 2019.
  • Tyler Moffe posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 assists. He also added three rebounds and three steals.
  • Moffe is the first Bulldog with double-digit assists since Tyson Batiste dished out 11 assists against Southeast Missouri on Nov. 19, 2019.
  • Hayden Brown registered his fifth 20-point game of the season with a game-high 25 points.
  • Kaiden Rice joined Brown in the 20-point club with 24 points on 4-of-8 shooting from behind the arc.
  • Fletcher Abee was the fourth Bulldog in double figures with 14 points. He added five rebounds and four assists.
  • Stephen Clark continued to protect the rim with three blocked shots.
 
Up Next
The Bulldogs will take a few days off for the holiday before beginning preparation for the Southern Conference opener against UNCG on Dec. 30. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside McAlister Field House.
