Rifle Opens Southern Conference Rifle Championships This Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 22nd-ranked Citadel mixed and the 28th-ranked women's rifle teams will travel to Statesboro, Georgia this weekend for the 2020 Southern Conference Rifle Championships hosted by Georgia Southern.
The SoCon features No. 19 UAB, 20th-ranked North Georgia, No. 23 VMI, No. 24 Wofford, VMI's 25th-ranked women's team and 29th-ranked Georgia Southern.
WEEKEND SCHEDULE
The weekend will begin with three-position smallbore on Saturday, March 7. Competition will begin at 8 a.m. The teams will then compete in the air rifle competition on Sunday, March 8. Action will get underway on Sunday at 7:45 a.m. with an awards ceremony to follow.
LAST TIME OUT
The 22nd-ranked Citadel mixed rifle team and the 27th-ranked women's team hosted 12th-ranked NC State, No. 20 UAB, No. 25 Wofford and members of 24th-ranked Georgia Southern in an NCAA Qualifying match on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23.
The Wolfpack took the match with an aggregate score of 4644, while UAB finished second with a score of 4597. The Bulldogs' mixed team finished just behind the Blazers with an aggregate score of 4554. The Terriers finished the weekend with a 4478, while the Bulldog women rounded things out with an aggregate score of 4196.
Senior Alexander McAlear, one of three seniors competing in their final home match, paced the Bulldogs on Sunday with a second-place aggregate score of 1144. The 1144 is his second-best effort of the season. Wofford's Daniel Wesson took top honors on Sunday with an 1151.
LAST YEAR'S CONFERENCE MEET
The No. 23 Citadel mixed rifle team wrapped up the 2019 SoCon Rifle Championships hosted by Georgia Southern with a third-place showing with UAB winning its first SoCon Rifle Championship. UAB's Michael Dietz and The Citadel's Izzie Blystone were named co-freshman of the year, while Georgia Southern head coach Sandra Worman and UAB's head coach Lori Goodwin were named co-coaches of the year. Air rifle champion Rosemary Kramer of Georgia Southern was named the Air Rifle Athlete of the Year, while Dietz was named the Smallbore Athlete of the Year and North Georgia's Tobin Sanctuary won the individual title. UAB's Holly Hayes earned the Pinnacle Award as the student-athlete with the highest GPA on the championship-winning team. UAB won the smallbore title on the first day of the championship before Georgia Southern claimed air rifle the following day.
