CHARLESTON, S.C. – When fans come to McAlister Field House in the Fall, things will have a new feel on the home side as the seatback stands on the east side of the field house are being replaced.
The Citadel and the athletics department worked together to make the project happen as both groups utilize the space for numerous events throughout the academic year.
"Replacing the home-side bleachers at McAlister Field House is very exciting and very much needed," said director of athletics
Mike Capaccio. "This will make a huge improvement and really enhance the atmosphere for all athletic events, graduation, leadership day and all the other events hosted in McAlister Field House. It was a team effort, and I want to thank The Citadel senior staff for recognizing the need for this to happen and then making it happen."
The new seats are being installed by Irwin Seating based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The previous seat-back stands were installed during the McAlister Field House renovation in 1989.
The new stands, which will feature wider aisles with hand rails, will include 1,008 padded seats between the fixed seating area near the top of the stands and those seats included in the telescoping section, adding comfort and maneuverability for fans attending the many events McAlister Field House hosts each year. The new seats will be finished in a leather-like material for easy cleaning.
The project will last approximately five weeks and begins with the demolition of the old stands beginning today, Monday, May 4, through the end of the week. The new stands and seats will then be installed over a four-week period.
