Strong Effort Leads Bulldogs to Four-Set Victory Over Samford

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Alicia Roberts came off the bench to spark a huge rally in the fourth set as The Citadel defeated Samford 3-1 (20-25, 19-25, 25,19, 23-25) Friday evening in McAlister Field House. 
 
The win is the first time The Citadel has beat Samford at home, and only the third victory in the series.

How it Happened
  • The Citadel started the opening set strong with back-to-back kills from Sharlissa de Jesus.
  • The Bulldogs kept the lead until a Samford kill and service ace tied the set up at 16.
  • Points were exchanged until a kill from Ali Ruffin allowed The Citadel the momentum they needed to finish the set at 25-20.
  • The teams started the second set evenly matched and traded points to a 13-13 tie.
  • The Citadel began pulling ahead after a kill from de Jesus and went on a 9-2 run forcing Samford into a timeout.
  • After a kill from Maddy Cardenas and a service ace from Ruffin, The Citadel was able to end the set at 25-19.
  • The third set saw a similar start and tied up at 10-10 until Samford was able to go on a 5-1 run.
  • The Citadel fought their way back within two points, but ultimately Samford was able to pull ahead and end the set at 25-19.
  • Samford came out strong and started set four with a six-point lead. 
  • A kill from Makaya Middleton and a service ace from Ruffin broke the run.
  • The Citadel was once again able to pull within two points, but Samford pulled ahead forcing The Citadel into a time out. 
  • A Samford error turned the tables and allowed The Citadel to go on a nine-point run, tying the set at 18.
  • After exchanging the next few points, Brooke Shively got a service ace and pulled The Citadel ahead for the first time in the set.
  • A combination of kills and Samford errors allowed The Citadel to end the set and match at 25-23.

  • The victory was just the third for the Bulldogs in the series with Samford, but the second win in the last four matches.
  • The Citadel had a season-high 22 block assists.
  • Gina Delancey led the way with five block assists.
  • Alicia Roberts played just one set, but registered three block assists and one solo block.
  • Sharlissa de Jesus led the Bulldogs with 22 kills and 15 digs. She also added four block assists and one solo block.
  • Ali Ruffin followed with 10 kills and nine digs.
  • Kenzie Kellerman matched her season-high of 26 digs.
  • Belle Hogan handed out 41 assists, seven digs, four block assists and three kills.
  • Maddy Cardenas led the Bulldogs with a .750 hitting percentage.
  • Gina Delancey saw her streak of four-straight matches without an error come to an end, but finished the match with six kills and five block assists.
