Bulldogs Sweep Paladins

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team swept Furman for the first time in program history, taking down the Paladins, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-19), Wednesday night inside McAlister Field House.

How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs wasted little time in getting the crowd into the match as three-straight kills from Makaya Middleton, Gina Delancey and Sharlissa de Jesus gave The Citadel the 6-3 lead.
  • Furman battled its way back to take a 13-11 advantage, but the Bulldogs responded and took the lead for good, 19-18, on a kill from Maddy Cardenas.
  • That kill sparked a 6-0 run that set up set point. The Bulldogs won the set as Furman's next serve sailed long.
  • The teams traded the first 16 points of the second set before the Bulldogs went on a 12-4 run to take control of the set.
  • Delancey and Cardenas helped to keep the lead, and de Jesus ended things with a kill.
  • The momentum carried over into the third set as a pair of kills from Middleton and an error from the Paladins gave the Bulldogs the 3-0 lead.
  • Furman was able to tie the set at 4-4, but The Citadel quickly responded with a 10-3 run to seize control.
  • The Bulldogs fed off the crowd and did not allow the Paladins to get any closer than five points the remainder of the set.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The victory marked just the fourth victory for the Bulldogs in the series against Furman. All three previous victories came in five sets.
  • Sharlissa de Jesus and Ali Ruffin each posted double-doubles. de Jesus finished with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Ruffin added 10 kills and 12 digs.
  • The middle block combo of Gina Delancey and Maddy Cardenas combined for 13 kills on 27 swings, with just one error. Delancey had six kills on 12 swings, without an error, while Cardenas posted seven kills on 15 swings.
  • Delancey added a pair of solo blocks and one block assist, while Cardenas had one solo block and two block assists.
  • Belle Hogan registered 32 assists and six digs.
  • Kenzie Kellerman tied for the team-high with 13 digs.
