Volleyball Falls at Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Citadel volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (23-25, 15-25, 23-25) match at Mercer in the first road Southern Conference match of the spring Sunday afternoon inside Hawkins Arena.

How it Happened
  • The teams exchanged the first six points of the match before Mercer went on a 3-0 run to open a 6-3 advantage.
  • The Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run to take a four-point advantage. The run was highlighted by back-to-back service aces from Sharlissa de Jesus.
  • The Citadel would later use a 4-0 run to open up a 17-11 lead in the first set.
  • The Bears responded with a 10-4 run of their own to tie the set at 21-21.
  • Mercer would get back-to-back points to set up set point, and Taylor Lynch secured the set with a kill.
  • The second set started with three-straight points for the Bears before the Bulldogs got going to tie the set at 5-5.
  • The set would turn in the Bears favor a short-time later as a 9-1 run helped Mercer open an 18-9 advantage.
  • The Bulldogs were not able to get any closer than seven points the remainder of the set.
  • The Citadel opened the third set with kills from Makaya Middleton and Alicia Roberts to take an early 3-1 advantage.
  • Mercer responded with a 9-0 run to open a seven point lead.
  • The Citadel did not go away quietly as an 8-3 Bulldog run helped narrow the gap to 15-14.
  • The Bulldogs would battle all the back to tie the score 17-17, but Mercer quickly regained the momentum and surged ahead to a 23-19 lead.
  • A kill from Mellanie King and an attack error from Mercer pulled the 'Dogs within one point late.
  • The Bulldogs were unable to complete the comeback as Jaida Howell put the match away with a kill.

  • Sharlissa de Jesus added six kills, seven digs, two service aces and three blocks.
  • Alicia Roberts came off the bench with three kills and two blocks in two sets.
