CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Kane Duncan claimed the individual championship in the men's 400m dash, one of 19 top-10 performances by The Citadel on the final day of the 2021 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Western Carolina on Sunday.
Overall, The Citadel placed fifth as a team on the men's side with 100 total points, the most by the Bulldogs in an outdoor championship since 2018, while the women took seventh place, posting their best point total (50) in an outdoor championship meet since the 2007 campaign.
Men's Results
- Kane Duncan starred in the 400m dash finals, crossing the line in 47.89 to capture The Citadel's first outdoor title in the event since Brunson Miller won back-to-back championships in 2010 and 2011. Treonte Newton also earned points for the Bulldogs with an eighth-place finish in 49.57.
- Timiebi Ogobri bettered his time from the preliminary heats of the 100m dash, finishing in 10.84 in Sunday's finals to earn a sixth-place finish.
- JP Caglione, who captured the hammer throw title on Sunday, led The Citadel in both the discus and the shot put on Sunday. Caglione took third in the former after a throw of 153-2 (46.68m) to earn all-conference honors and placed fourth with a heave of 49-8.5 (15.15m) in the shot put.
- Prince Howard-Whitaker also picked up top-10 finishes in both of Sunday's throws events, with his throw of 147-2 (44.86m) good for a fifth-place finish in the discus and taking seventh in the shot put with a mark of 48-1.75 (14.67m). Johnathan Toole totaled a top-10 finish in the shot put as well, taking 10th (42-9.75/13.05m).
- The Citadel earned both silver and bronze in the high jump off the performances of Stephen Kraeling and Prince Moody. Kraeling earned silver with a leap of 6-8.75 (2.05m), while Moody brought home bronze with a mark of 6-6.75 (2.00m).
- The men's 4x400m relay squad of Duncan, Newton, Tyler Manon and Jeremy Shipley crossed the line in 3:16.10 to earn the silver medal.
- The Bulldogs' second relay team of the afternoon brought home a fourth-place finish as Ogobri, Newton, Mac Strunk and Duncan crossed the line in 42.39 in the 4x100m relay.
Women's Results
- Mecca Jackson broke her own school record in the 100m dash finals, earning all-conference honors with a second-place finish after crossing the line in 11.88. Jackson also broke another school record in the 200m dash, besting Tanisha Bethel's seven-year old record with a time of 24.26 to finish fourth.
- After claiming the hammer throw trophy on Saturday, Milan Williams returned with a pair of fifth-place finish in both the discus and shot put on Sunday. Williams reached a distance of 124-8 (38.01m) in the discus throw and hit 40-6.25 (12.35m) in the shot put.
- Mya Dollard earned points for The Citadel in the high jump, reaching 5-3 (1.60m) to take sixth place.
- The women's 4x100m team of Tamia Burch, Jackson, Cyla Byrd and Jay Mitchell placed fifth with a school-record time of 47.64.
- In the afternoon's other relay, the team of Jackson, Joie Royer, Mitchell and Gabby Shea crossed the line in 3:54.66 to take seventh overall.
