Makaya Middleton had a career-high 18 kills, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell 3-1 (15-25, 28-26, 20-25, 21-25) to Northern Illinois in the first match of the CSU Buccaneer Invitational.

How it Happened
- The Citadel got the match going with a kill from Makaya Middleton
- After the teams exchanged the next few points, the Huskies went on a 12-6 run to open a six-point advantage.
- A kill from Ali Ruffin and a block from Belle Hogan and Maya Elassal pulled the Bulldogs within four, but NIU did not let The Citadel to get any closer in taking the opening set.
- The second set started the teams exchanging the first 18 points before the Bulldogs rattled off three-straight points to take a 12-9 lead.
- Sharlissa de Jesus delivered a kill to put the Bulldogs up 21-16, but the Huskies answered with a 6-1 run to tie the set, 22-22.
- The Citadel fought off a set point before taking the lead on a service error and ending the set with a kill from Middleton.
- A kill from Ruffin helped the Bulldogs open an 11-6 lead in the third set. NIU responded with a run of their own to take a 20-17 advantage.
- The Bulldogs were able to pull within two before the Huskies scored the final three points to take the set.
- The Citadel jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the fourth set, fueled by a pair of kills from Middleton and two blocks from Ruffin.
- The Bulldogs would maintain a five-point lead before NIU was able to tie the set, 17-17.
- The Huskies carried that momentum down the stretch to take the set and the match.

- Makaya Middleton finished with a career-high 19 kills. She bested her previous career high of 16 kills set against Wofford on Oct. 16, 2019.
- Sharlissa de Jesus posted her second-straight double-double with 19 kills and 18 digs.

- Kenzie Kellerman finished with 17 digs, and Ali Ruffin added 12.
