The Citadel Rifle to Take Aim at SoCon Championships this Weekend

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Citadel mixed and women's rifle teams are set to take aim at the Southern Conference (SoCon) Championships this weekend, hosted by Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The conference's six schools will take part in Saturday's smallbore and Sunday's air rifle, with the team and individual championships for each event up for grabs, along with the aggregate champions.
The Bulldogs captured five victories over their fall and spring seasons, with four more decided by 53 points or less. Sophomore Charlotte Welsh and freshman James Hart IV both have perennially finished high on The Citadel's scoring lists, with Welsh posting a season team high with a 1,170 aggregate against North Georgia on Nov. 13, posting a 583 in smallbore and 587 in air rifle. Hart's best score was in the season finale win over Wofford, earning a 1,167 aggregate by way of a 582 in smallbore and 585 in air rifle. Senior Jack Wittman has also been a familiar name with high scores, including his best mark of 1,152 at VMI on Nov. 6, charting a 575 smallbore tally and 577 air rifle ledger.
Over on the women's team, Riley Neiders posted the Bulldogs' top six scores of the season, with her best of 1,143 happening against Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 30, earning 562 in smallbore and 581 in air rifle. Another highlight was her team-best 1,129 aggregate by way of a 555 smallbore and 564 air rifle to help the women best Wofford on Feb. 19. Deanna Douglas and Demi Perez assisted in the win, both with 1,118 aggregates for a season best. Douglas earned 555 in smallbore and 563 in air rifle, while Perez tallied 546 in smallbore and 572 in air rifle.
The 2022 Southern Conference Rifle Championship will be held at VMI's Kilbourne Hall for the second time since the league resurrected rifle as a sponsored sport in 2016-17. The championship was held in Lexington, Virginia, 10 times from 1974-85 during the SoCon's first stint sponsoring the sport, from 1956-85. North Georgia won last year's SoCon Championships with a 4,600 aggregate following posting a new championship record air rifle score of 2,330, preceded by the Nighthawks' 2,270 smallbore score.
