Volleyball Drops Season Opener

 
 
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team dropped their season opener in three (25-23, 25-23, 25-16) on Friday evening in College of Charleston's TD Arena.

How it Happened
 
  • Sadie Gomez started the match with two kills and helped the Bulldogs pull ahead to a 6-3 lead.
  • A service ace from Ali Ruffin and a solo block from Gina Delancey forced College of Charleston into their first time out of the night. 
  • The Bulldogs went on a four-point run, only to be returned by another four-point run from the Cougars putting the set at 12-8.
  • A kill from Ruffin broke the Cougar's streak, and was followed by two kills from Maddy Cardenas
  • College of Charleston came back and tied the set at 21-21. 
  • Points were exchanged before the Cougars end the set at 25-23.
  • The teams continued to be evenly matched at the beginning of the second set and were tied up at 13-13.
  • The set stayed tight until College of Charleston took their first two-point lead. They then used their momentum to push ahead to 21-18.
  • Gomez broke the Cougar's run, but it was not enough and the set was once again ended at 25-23.
  • College of Charleston came into the third set strong and took a three-point lead.
  • The Cougar's continued to extend their lead (10-5).
  • A kill and service ace from Cardenas pulled the Bulldogs closer, but College of Charleston took off once again (16-10).
  • After efforts from Delancey and Belle Hogan, the Bulldogs pulled within three, but attack errors allowed College of Charleston to end the set and match 25-16.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
  • Ali Ruffin led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and 10 digs, second-best to her career high of 21 kills.
  • Belle Hogan (five) and Sadie Gomez (six) recorded career-highs in kills.
  • Maddy Cardenas followed with 11 kills and two service aces. 
  • Sam Barnes made her first career start and put away three kills and one solo block.

The Bulldogs continue tournament action on Aug. 27 with Fresno State at 10 a.m., followed by Rutgers at 2 p.m.
