Volleyball Splits Opening Day at Clemson Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team split opening day of the Clemson Invitational, dropping to Jacksonville State in five (22-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-9, 14-16) and defeating Gardner-Webb in three (25-19, 27-25, 22-25, 25-18) on Friday in Clemson's Jervey Gym.

How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs put away the first point of the match, but Jacksonville State quickly responded with a four-point run.
  • A Gamecock error allowed Maddy Cardenas to get a hold of the ball and score a service ace, followed by a block from Sam Barnes and Sadie Gomez to tie up at 4-4.
  • Jacksonville State took the lead again, but kills from Ali Ruffin, Cardenas and a service ace from Gina Delancey pulled the Bulldogs back to a tie at 12.
  • The Bulldogs stayed within one point until the Gamecocks went on a 3-0 run and forced a timeout. 
  • Kills from Cardenas, Ruffin, Barnes and a service ace from Belle Hogan made for a close set, but Jacksonville State pushed ahead and ended it at 25-22. 
  • The second set started with an 8-6 Bulldog lead with kills from Gomez, two service aces from Kenzie Kellerman and block assists from Delancey.
  • The Gamecocks responded with an 8-2 run, interrupted by a kill from Gomez.
  • Jacksonville State continued to push forward and won the set 25-17.
  • The Citadel came into the third set strong and took a 5-0 lead, two service aces from Hogan contributing. 
  • Kills from Makaya Middleton, Ruffin and Gomez extended the lead to 9-3.
  • The Gamecocks slowly fought back and took their first lead of the set at 21-20. 
  • A kill from Cardenas, service ace from Hogan and solo block from Middleton allowed the Bulldogs to win the third set 25-23.
  • The Citadel started the fourth with kills across the board, which gave them a 10-5 lead. 
  • Another 8-1 run pushed the Bulldogs even further to a 18-7 lead. 
  • The Bulldogs ended the set on a five-point run (25-9).
  • Points were evenly distributed throughout the beginning of the fifth set, tied at six.
  • Two block assists from Delancey gave The Citadel their first two-point lead. 
  • The Bulldogs made it to match point (14-11), but Jacksonville State went on a five-point run and won the set 16-14.

  • Sadie Gomez recorded an individual match career-high of 12 kills (.375 hitting percentage).
  • Ali Ruffin led the Bulldogs with 14 kills and 10 digs. 
  • Belle Hogan handed out 43 assists and also hit an individual match career-high with five service aces. 
  • Makaya Middleton made her first appearance of the season with six kills and three digs.
  • Gina Delancey matched her career-high with seven block assists.

How it Happened
  • The Citadel started set one on a 2-1 advantage with a kill and service ace from Maddy Cardenas
  • Points were exchanged and the set was still evenly matched at 13 after a kill from Ali Ruffin.
  • A kill from Makaya Middleton and a service ace from Cardenas gave The Citadel their first three-point lead.
  • The Citadel continued to extend their lead with an 11-1 run and the set was ended at 25-19.
  • The second set began with two service aces from Hogan and led to a 4-0 advantage.
  • Kills from Hogan, Delancey and Ruffin kept the lead until Gardner-Webb fought their way back to a 9-9 tie. 
  • Gardner-Webb went on a 6-0 scoring run before a block from Gomez and Ruffin interrupted, igniting a run of their own and tying the set at 24. 
  • A kill from Cardenas pushed the set to a 27-25 end. 
  • The third set was evenly matched at 5-5 with kills from Ruffin and Jamie Holton.
  • The Citadel used a service ace from Ruffin and kills from Barnes and Hogan to find an 8-5 lead.
  • Gardner-Webb took a temporary lead before The Citadel responded with a run tying the set at 15.
  • The set stayed tied until 20, but Gardner-Webb pushed ahead and ended the set 25-22, forcing a fourth.
  • Gardner-Webb came into the third set strong, but The Citadel responded and took their first lead at 7-6 after a kill from Cardenas.
  • The Citadel used their momentum to go on a 6-0 scoring run, extending their lead to 13-7.
  • Kills from Gomez, Delancey, Hogan and Cardenas all contributed to pushing The Citadel to the end of the set (25-18) and match.

  • Ali Ruffin put away eight kills and 14 digs.

The Bulldogs will conclude tournament action Saturday, Sep. 3 against Clemson. The match will be streamed on ACCX and first serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
