CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team erased a 16-point second half deficit as
Elijah Morgan drained a go ahead 3-pointer with 42 seconds remaining to stun the Mercer University Bears, 68-66, on Wednesday night.
Morgan scored a game-high 21 points, including 19 in the second half as he went a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Quentin Millora-Brown registered his ninth double-double of the season, while filling the stat sheet with 11 points, 13 rebounds, five steals, and two blocks.
AJ Smith chipped in 12 with seven boards while
Madison Durr netted 11 points and three dimes.
First Half:
- A MER fast-break layup put the Bears up six, 17-11, forcing a CIT timeout at the 8:11 mark.
- Smith's layup with 3:22 left until halftime kept the Bulldogs within five, 26-21, but the Bears closed the half on a 9-0 run to lead 35-21 at the intermission.
Second Half:
- A MER three-point play held the margin at 16, 43-27, four minutes into the second half.
- Davis' make from beyond the arc pulled CIT within single digits, 49-41, but a MER floater extended the edge back to double digits, 53-41.
- QMB dished to Durr, whose layup cut the deficit to seven, 53-46, at the under-eight timeout.
- The Bears hit a timely three at the 5:40 mark to nudge the lead back to double-digits, 60-49.
- Smith's three trimmed it to six, 62-56, before Durr's bucket and-1 made it a two-point affair, 66-64, with 1:22 to go.
- After a MER miss on the ensuing possession, Smith found Morgan for a wing 3-pointer to give CIT a 67-66 lead with 42 seconds remaining.
- On the following possession, the Bears had a couple of second chance opportunities go awry as QMB secured the rebound and made 1-of-2 from the line, 68-66 Bulldogs, with :02 seconds left.
- MER advanced the ball with a timeout and got a good look from the near wing, but it missed long off the back iron as CIT held on 68-66.
