CHARLESTON, SC – The Citadel basketball team led by three with 1:32 to go but the Furman University Paladins took advantage of extra opportunities, tying the game with less than a second remaining in regulation before prevailing in overtime 82-79 on Wednesday night.
AJ Smith scored 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field while adding eight boards and five assists.
Elijah Morgan also netted 24, going 5-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Freshman
Keynan Davis continued his strong play with 15 points, five rebounds, and two dimes as
Quentin Millora-Brown added 12 and seven boards.
First Half:
- Tony Carpio's dunk gave CIT an early 14-9 lead at the under-12 media timeout.
- FUR tied the game at 14-14 before a 5-0 run by Morgan put CIT back up five at the 9:37 mark of the first half.
- A Smith fastbreak layup extended the Bulldogs edge to double-digits, 28-18.
- Morgan's fifth 3-pointer of the half gave CIT its largest lead of the game, 42-24, but FUR ended the half with two threes of their own, to trail by 12 at the break.
Second Half:
- A 10-3 run by the Dins early in the second stanza cut the deficit to single digits, 50-43, forcing the Bulldogs to talk things over.
- After a CIT miss, FUR hit a transition 3-ball to make it a one-possession game, 54-51, at the 11:27 mark before a corner three knotted the game at 56.
- The Dins took a brief 58-56 lead, but Davis' corner 3-pointer put the Bulldogs ahead 61-58.
- Davis' bucket and-1 retied the game at 67-67, before Smith's corner triple gave CIT a 70-67 edge with 2:58 to go.
- A QMB layup put CIT ahead 72-69 with 1:32 to go as FUR missed three-pointers on each of its next two possessions.
- The Bulldog missed two front ends of 1-in-1s in the final 30 seconds and the Dins took advantage of the second chance, hitting a near-wing three with .08 tenths remaining to send the game to overtime tied at 72-72.
Overtime:
- A transition three put FUR ahead 77-74 at 2:45 mark of the extra session.
- After CIT made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, a FUR 3-point play put it ahead 80-75 with 1:54 to go.
- A pair of Bulldogs free throws trimmed the margin to three, 82-79, before CIT forced a FUR shot clock violation with 18.8 seconds left.
- CIT got off three 3-point attempts on the ensuing possession, but none were able to go down as the Bulldogs fell 82-79.
