CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team trailed 62-57 to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs with 3:34 left in the second half before closing the game on a 14-0 run to hand the third place Mocs a 71-62 defeat on Saturday afternoon.
Madison Durr and
AJ Smith led the Bulldogs with 18 points each.
Elijah Morgan chipped in 12 with six rebounds and five steals.
Quentin Millora-Brown earned his fourth straight double-double with 15 points, 10 boards and three assists.
First Half:
- Smith's layup put CIT ahead 16-10 at the 14:19 mark of the opening half.
- A UTC 3-pointer knotted the game at 18-18 before the Mocs took a 30-21 lead with 3:25 remaining until halftime.
- Keynan Davis' triple cut the margin to six, 30-24, but the Mocs hit two more 3-pointers to hold a 10-point edge, 36-26, at the intermission.
Second Half:
- A Morgan fastbreak layup trimmed the deficit to two, 43-41, four minutes into the second half but UTC stretched the differential back to seven, 51-44, at the 10:44 mark.
- QMB once again pulled CIT within two, 57-55, before a UTC layup nudged the margin to five, 62-57, with 3:34 left to go.
- Seven straight points by Durr put CIT ahead 64-62 as Morgan followed with a steal and fastbreak layup, 66-62 Bulldogs with 1:04 remaining.
- On the next possession, the Mocs missed a 3-pointer and Durr made both ensuing free throws to extend the CIT advantage to 68-62 with 40 ticks left.
- UTC missed a quick layup on its next trip down the floor and CIT made 3-of-4 from the charity stripe in the last 30 seconds to cap off a 71-62 win.
