BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Citadel basketball team came back from an 11-point deficit to tie the game at 59-59 with 9:46 remaining in the game but the Samford University Bulldogs used a 53-point second half to beat the Bulldogs 92-80 on Saturday afternoon.
Quentin Millora-Brown led The Citadel with 16 points and 11 rebounds, securing his 15th double-double of the season and in doing so, setting the single-season record for double-doubles in a season.
AJ Smith added 15 points and four rebounds.
Colby McAllister and
Madison Durr chipped in 14 and 13 points respectively.
First Half:
- CIT scored the first four points of the game, but SAM answered with a 13-0 run to go ahead by nine just over six minutes into play.
- Smith's free throw tied the game at 17-17 at the 9:03 mark before SAM responded with an 11-4 run to take a 28-21 lead, timeout CIT.
- This time CIT answered as McAllister's 5-0 spurt pulled the Bulldogs within two, 28-26.
- SAM nudged the edge back to five, 35-30, with 4:26 left in the opening half.
- Elijah Morgan's first 3-pointer of the game cut the deficit back to two, 37-35, as CIT trailed 39-37 at the break.
Second Half:
- A SAM 3-ball pushed the margin back to nine, 51-42, three minutes into the second stanza.
- CIT surged back with a 18-8 run, including a 4:47 scoreless stretch by SAM, to knot the game at 59-59 just over halfway through the second stanza.
- A 10-2 SAM spurt put it up 67-61 before a 3-ball gave the home team its biggest lead of the game up to that point at 12, 75-63, with 5:11 left.
- SAM extended the margin to 16, 82-66, but CIT would get as close as 10 with 55 seconds left before SAM closed out the 92-80 home win.
