Ruffin Claims SoCon Javelin Title

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Ali Ruffin claimed the Southern Conference javelin title as the Bulldogs had one school record, one freshman record, and seven top-ten finishes on day one of the 2024 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships.

Ali Ruffin has won her first individual Southern Conference javelin championship in her Bulldog career. She threw 156-08 (47.77m) to finish first overall and broke her school record. Ruffin now joins Mady Riegel as the most recent Bulldog to win the javelin, with Riegel winning in 2016 and 2017.
 
Ruffin and Riegel are the only women's field athletes to win the javelin in the program's history.
 
Karmen Williams earned all-conference honors as she finished second in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 164-10 (50.25m).
 
Jordan Chestnut earned all-freshman honors in the men's long jump, finishing in seventh with a leap of 21-10.75 (6.67m)
 
Jack Scott finished fourth in the pole vault by clearing 14-09.00 (4.50m), earning all-freshman honors.
 
Arthur Parham earned all-freshman honors after throwing 197-08 (60.26m) to finish in fifth. Parham broke head coach Kris Kut's freshman record from 1997 of 185-4. 

On the Women's Side
  • Mecca Jackson qualified for the 100m finals after finishing fourth with 11.68 in the prelims and fourth in the 200m prelims with a time of 24.39 to qualify for the finals.
  • Cyla Byrd finished ninth in the 100m prelims to qualify for the finals with a time of 12.12.
  • Karmen Williams finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 133-00.
  • Emily Danielsson placed fifth in the hammer throw with a throw of 154-03.
  • Sadie Grove threw 120-09 to place sixth in the javelin.
On the Men's Side
  • Treonte Newton finished first overall in the 100m prelims with a time of 10.58 to qualify for the finals. He also finished third in the 200m prelims with a time off to qualify for the finals.
  • Bradlee Jones placed second in the 100m prelims with a qualifying time of 10.63 for the finals.
  • Caleb McDonald recorded a throw of 172-11 to finish seventh in the javelin.
  • Solomon Ghosh threw 152-05 and finished eighth overall in the hammer throw.
