Gaston Murray

Gaston Murray joined The Citadel men’s tennis program as the assistant coach in the fall of 2019.

With Murray’s assistance, the Bulldogs ended the shortened 2020 season having won four of their last five matches of the season.

Freshman Zvonko Bencedic led the team with 11 singles victories, including 10 during the spring portion of the season. Bencedic went a perfect 6-0 at No. 4 singles and claimed three more wins at No. 5, ending the season on a seven-match winning streak, including a pair of Southern Conference victories.

Prior to arriving in Charleston, Murray served as a teaching professional at the Breakers of Palm Beach, was the hitting partner under Jay Berger at the Ibis Golf and Country Club and served as the South Olive Park Teach Professional.

One of the highlights of Murray’s career was getting to partner with world-ranked No. 48 Naomi Osaka for two sessions.

Murray has also served as the TDK Summer Camp Teaching Professional at the Winston Trails (2011-17), the high performance hitter and coach for the Johan Kriek Tennis Academy (2016-17) and the hitting partner under Robby Poole (Serena Williams’ former hitting partner and former ATP Tour player) in 2017.

Murray graduated in May 2016 from UNC Greensboro with a bachelor of arts degree in media studies, competing for the Spartans’ men’s tennis team from 2012-16. After graduating, Murray played on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit. On June 6, 2017, he reached the No. 1 ranking in the Florida Men’s Open rankings.
