No stranger to the Lowcountry, Danny Lewis returns as an assistant coach at The Citadel. Lewis will serve as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach for head coach Maurice Drayton.

Lewis returns to The Citadel after spending the previous five seasons as the head coach at Heathwood Hall High School in Columbia. He guided the Highlanders to 28 victories, including back-to-back winnings seasons for the first time in 10 years. In 2019, Lewis led Heathwood to an 8-5 record and a semifinal appearance.

Prior to his time at Heathwood, Lewis spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach at South Carolina State.

In his time with the Bulldogs, Lewis worked with the running backs, tight ends, quarterbacks and special teams. He also served as the recruiting coordinator. In his first two seasons, Lewis coached SC State’s all-time leading rusher, Will Ford. Ford would earn All-America honors, while also being named the MEAC Player of the Year.

As the special team’s coordinator, Lewis also coached Blake Erickson to All-American accolades.

Lewis went to SC State after spending the 2006-07 seasons as the director of football operations at Middle Tennessee, overseeing the day-to-day logistics of the football program.

Lewis’ time in Murfreesboro was preceded by five seasons on staff at The Citadel. He held several assignments in his time in Charleston, including assistant athletic director for compliance and academic services (2005), assistant head coach (2003-04), and running backs and recruiting coordinator (2001-04).

During his tenure with The Citadel, Lewis coached All-Southern Conference performers at running back, including Nehemiah Broughton, who was selected in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins.

Lewis spent the spring of 2000 on Coach Tony Felder’s staff at Benedict as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, before accepting a graduate assistant position under Lou Holtz at South Carolina.

Lewis began his coaching career at Newberry College (1998-99) under Mike Taylor. A native of Lexington, S.C., Lewis played tight end and lettered at Charleston Southern before graduating in 1995 from South Carolina with a degree in sports management.

Lewis and his wife, Kim, have two sons, Eric and Alex.
