Matt Shimko joined The Citadel Athletic Department in September 2025 as Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. He serves as the primary communications contact for men’s basketball, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, and track and field.
Prior to arriving in Charleston, Shimko spent two years at Jacksonville University as an Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant, where he worked with baseball, volleyball, beach volleyball, and cross country. He earned his Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Jacksonville in 2025.
Before his time at JU, Shimko worked in the front office of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, gaining valuable experience in professional sports operations.
A Jacksonville, Fla. native, Shimko was a four-year starter on the football team at Monmouth College, where he earned All-Conference honors twice and served as team captain for two conference championship seasons. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Business Administration.
Before college, Shimko attended Mandarin High School, where he was a four-year varsity football starter and captain of the 2018 8A State Championship team. He earned All-District honors as both a junior and senior and was a member of the school’s Student-Athlete Leadership Team.
He is the son of Michael Shimko and Stacy Hathaway and has three siblings: Ashleigh, JJ, and his twin, Michael.
