Opening Tip/First Pitch
As one could tell by the headline, we're in our overlap season as baseball begins at 4 pm today while basketball continues.

The Diamond Dogs host the Air Force Academy for three games this weekend – the season opener is scheduled for 4 pm today (Friday) and there's a doubleheader slated for Saturday (12noon).

Sunday is a big day for The Citadel basketball program as Southern Conference and military rival VMI comes to McAlister Field House for a 5:30 pm tipoff in a game where we're billing it "Pack the Mac."  The Corps of Cadets will be out in full force and there'll be lots of excitement for this important contest.  We hope to see you at Riley Park first, then at McAlister Field House for the tipoff.

Our first salute is extended to basketball seniors P.J. Horgan and Ashton Moore, who were named to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District team.  We also acknowledge wrestling's Ty Buckiso (141-pounds) and Matt Frisch (149), as they captured their weight class at the recent All-Academy Championships.

The next salute goes to Aaron Walker, who was named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Month for January.  We also congratulate Jackie Thompson, who was named the Southern Conference Indoor Women's Track Athlete of the Week.  And finally, we have a shout-out for Demetrius Nelson '08, who paced the Alumni to a decisive victory over a team from the Corps of Cadets in the 12th Annual Alumni Basketball Game on Saturday afternoon.

As you've come to expect, we have another solid issue full of news and notes, so enjoy and Go Bulldogs!!!

Basketball Tops Samford on Ashton Moore's Buzzer-Beater
ON THURSDAY NIGHT IN BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Ashton Moore scored the final five points of the game, including a jumper as time expired, to give The Citadel a 66-65 victory in the Pete Hanna Center. Trailing 64-61 with 1:10 remaining in the contest, Moore capitalized on a 3-pointer from left corner to deadlock the game at 64-all.

On the following possession, Samford's Michael Bradley drew a foul from Quinton Marshall and hit the front end of a one-and-one to make for a 65-64 contest. Jake Wright pulled down the missed free throw and Citadel coach Chuck Driesell immediately called timeout, putting the ball deep in Samford territory with 4.2 seconds remaining.

With the ball in Moore's hand, the senior went down three-quarters of the court and connected on the 18-foot jumper to give The Citadel its second SoCon road win of the season. Samford put itself in position to win the game after rallying from a 57-52 deficit, following a free throw by The Citadel's Brian White with 8:01 left in the contest.

Wright came through with timely 3-pointer on The Citadel end to make for a 60-58 lead, but it was short lived as Marcus Johnson and Jones-Gibson combined for three Samford points to give the Bulldogs a one point advantage with 2:42 left. A block by P.J. Horgan on defense, followed by a free throw by the Rio Rancho, N.M., native on the offensive end brought the game to a climatic 61-all tie. Samford answered with a 3-pointer from the left corner by Cunningham to make for the three-point lead.

Wright led four Citadel players in scoring with 20 points after knocking down 7-of-12 from the field, including six from beyond the arc. It marked the second time this season that the freshman scored 20 points in a game. Moore, who reached double digits for the 22nd time this season, finished 7-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-4 from long distance. He was also responsible for a game-high six assists.

ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN McALISTER FIELD HOUSE, Diante Baldwin finished with a team-high 17 points, notching 14 in the second half, to lead UNCG to a 79-63 victory over The Citadel. Baldwin's individual performance was overshadowed by The Citadel's Ashton Moore, who poured in a season-high 32 points. Moore hit 7-of-17 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and was successful on 15-of-16 attempts at the free throw line.

Moore became the sixth player in program history to record 30 points in his career on three occasions, which previously against UVA-Wise (30) and Davidson (35). He also placed himself in a seven-way tie for ninth-most free throw conversions (15) in a game.

Separated by one point at the intermission the two teams battled to a 45-all tie on a jumper by UNCG at the 15:26 mark. UNCG's lead ballooned to 67-53 before Moore sent home a timely 3-pointer from the right elbow on a pass from Warren Sledge. After a missed attempt for the Spartans on offense, Moore answered with a jumper to draw the Bulldogs within 67-58 as he drove home his 30th point. However, The Citadel would pull no closer.

For the 16th time this season Moore was the primary scorer for The Citadel's offense. P.J. Horgan added eight points and eight rebounds (five defensive) and Brian White contributed seven points and six boards (three offensive).

Buckiso, Frisch Shine at Wrestling's All-Academy Championships
The wrestling team earned six top four finishes, including first place showings by Ty Buckiso (141) and Matt Frisch (149), as it brought home fourth overall in this weekend's All-Academy Championships at O'Hara Hall on the Merchant Marine Academy campus.
