CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team heads to Tennessee on Friday for a 7 p.m. dual with Southern Conference rival Chattanooga.
Â
The Bulldogs (4-4 Overall, 2-1 SoCon) are looking to rebound from a recent 21-13 setback against Appalachian State earlier this week.
Â
Six victories, including a major decision in the 133-pound classification by Vito Pasone, helped Appalachian State earn the eight-point decision.
Â
Among the Bulldogs victories against the Mountaineers included a 197-pound showdown between Marcus Johnson and 2014 NCAA qualifier
Marshall Haas. Haas overpowered Johnson to emerge with a 12-5 decision and provided The Citadel with its first points of the dual.
Â
Trailing 21-3, The Citadel's Tyler Buckiso came away with a 3-2 decision against Michael Longo in the 141 match. That was followed by a
Matt Frisch 8-0 victory in the 149-pound classification against Javon Johnson.
Â
The Dogs closed out the dual by winning three straight as 2014 NCAA Qualifier
Aaron Walker defeated Zack Strickland by an 8-3 margin.
Â
Meanwhile, Chattanooga (7-5, 2-0 SoCon) breezed through a 46-0 shutout against Campbell at Maclellan Gym on Sunday. The Mocs scored their 17th consecutive Southern Conference win in the process.
Â
Campbell only dressed five wrestlers and forfeited at 125, 133, 141, 149 and 197. The Mocs, needing a break from a busy stretch of matches, did not make a number of their starters weigh in, including senior Sean Boyle. That resulted in a double-forfeit at 125.
Â
UTC was up 18-0 before the first whistle for the 157 match. Despite the big lead, the Mocs did not take their competition lightly. They only allowed three takedowns in the five contested bouts, while scoring two pins and a major decision.
Â
The Bulldogs next home match will take place at McAlister Field House against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at on Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.
