CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wresting team posted six wins, including two by major decision and two by pin, as it completed a 29-14 victory over over SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field House.
The win improved the Bulldogs to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in Southern Conference action.
The Bulldogs opened the dual with a pin by
Joaquin Marquez, 50 seconds into the 125-pound match. Marquez quickly grabbed his 16
th victory of the season against Nathan Day and provided The Citadel with a 6-0 advantage in the team score.
Cadet
Aaron Hansen posted a win by forfeit, which was followed by the first SIUE win of the day in the 141-pound classification. The Cougars' (4-15, 1-3 SoCon) Angelo Silvestro posted a medical default victory over
Ty Buckiso to slice the lead to 12-6.
The Bulldogs answered quickly with a major decision by
Matt Frisch in the 149 match. Frisch, recently ranked 29
th in his weight class by the NCAA coaches, earned a 10-2 victory against Karsten Van Velsor to move the team lead to double figures, 16-6.
Aaron Walker followed with a 12-4 major decision in the 157 match against SIUE's Sam Zimmerman. It marked Walker's sixth win in Southern Conference action this season and ninth in dual matches. Walker entered the match ranked 15
th by NCAA coaches in the 157 classification.
SIUE rebounded from back-to-back losses with a victory by Connor McMahon in the 165 match with Will Connell. McMahon posted an 11-2 major decision win and tripped up Connell for the third time this season in league action.
Feeding off the momentum from the previous match, SIUE's Jake Residori made for a 20-14 team score with a 9-4 decision in the 174-pound match with The Citadel's
Kenneth Radford.
The Cougars managed to pull even closer, 20-14, when Derek Nagel posted a 6-3 decision in the 184-pound match with
Jack Duane.
However, The Citadel kept its 4-0 mark at home intact with a 6-2 win by
Marshall Haas in the 197 showdown with Jake Tindle. The victory made for a 23-14 lead for the Bulldogs heading into the final match of the day.
The heavyweight battle featuring
Joe Bexley and
Chris Johnson was quickly decided as Bexley pinned Johnson at the 1:02 mark to make for a 29-14 victory by The Citadel.
The Bulldogs continue their swing through the Southern Conference when they head to Lexington, Va., to face rival VMI on Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
The Citadel concludes its season on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. against Davidson. Bulldog wrestling fans are encouraged to donate canned food to support the SoCon's Headlock on Hunger project at the entrance of that match.
