Bulldogs Down Stetson, 94-93

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team downed Stetson, 94-93, on Tuesday, delivering head coach Duggar Baucom his first win at the helm of the Bulldogs. Senior Derrick Henry poured in a game-high 25 points and freshman Zane Najdawi added 22 points, four rebounds and four blocks to propel The Citadel to a tight victory.

With his team trailing 93-92 in the waning moments of the game, Henry drove to the bucket, got fouled and calmly sank a pair of free throws to give the Bulldogs the lead. On Stetson's final possession, Najdawi polished off a gutsy game with a clutch block and The Citadel got the stop it needed to seal its first win of the 2015-16 campaign.

The game marked the first time the Bulldogs scored at least 94 points in a win over a Division I school since they took down Western Carolina 105-97 on Jan. 12, 2002. Senior point guard P.J. Boutte complemented the big-time performances from Najdawi and Henry with 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. The 10 assists were a career-high for Boutte in just his second game in a Bulldog uniform.

After a neck-and-neck first half that ended with The Citadel taking a 51-50 lead into the locker room, Stetson jumped out to a sizeable advantage early in the second half. Trailing 78-68 with more than 10 minutes remaining, Coach Baucom signaled for a timeout to regroup his troops.

The Bulldogs came tearing out of the break, putting together a game-changing 16-0 run to seize an 84-78 edge. Henry accounted for eight of the 16 points during the momentum swing, punctuating the run with a deep three-pointer.

Stetson battled back to tie the score at 90-90 with a minute left in the contest. After a Boutte layup, the Hatters hit a go-ahead three with 31 seconds on the clock, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.

The Bulldogs, now 1-1 on the season, continue a stretch of three games in five days with a home matchup against Mid-Atlantic Christian on Thursday and a road trip to Presbyterian on Saturday. Thursday's tip at McAlister Field House is set for 6 p.m.
