CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team fell to Presbyterian 95-79 on Saturday night and dropped to 2-2 on the season. Junior
Brian White led the team with a season-high 18 points as five different Bulldogs scored in double figures.
Â
Seniors
P.J. Boutte and
Derrick Henry scored 14 points apiece and
Quinton Marshall and
Warren Sledge tossed in 11 points each. Freshman center
Zane Najdawi played 34 minutes of hard-nose action and pulled in a career-best 10 rebounds.
Â
The Bulldogs kept within striking distance until the final three minutes of the contest behind a hectic pressure defense. The Citadel forced 21 Presbyterian turnovers, marking the second consecutive game that head coach
Duggar Baucom's squad has pestered an opponent into committing more than 20 turnovers.
Â
The Blue Hose built an early 24-10 lead, but The Citadel battled back with a 9-2 run. Following a tough finish from Henry, Sledge and freshman
Quayson Williams hit consecutive three-pointers to close the gap to 26-19. Presbyterian maintained that advantage throughout the remainder of the first half.
Â
The Citadel countered a pair of Blue Hose runs with a flurry of baskets from White. The junior scored 11 straight points for the Bulldogs at one point as the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 58-51 with 15:49 remaining in the game. Behind several clutch buckets in the paint, Presbyterian increased its lead down the stretch and held off the Bulldogs, dealing Coach Baucom's team its second loss of the 2015-16 campaign.
Â
After a grueling a stretch to open the season that featured four games in the first eight days, The Citadel now turns to the USC Upstate Challenge in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Bulldogs will play three games over four days, launching the invitational vs. Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. That matchup will be followed by contests against Bob Jones and USC-Upstate on Friday and Saturday.
